Hi everyone, long time lurker first time poster here.
I'm a self taught artist trying to get into the freelance illustration business so I thought I'd post some pictures I've done for my portfolio.
Critique is very appreciated!

Welcome to Sijun! Smile

I'm loving the colours, for starters... Can't offer a critique (this stuff's beyond my
skill level). Hope to see more. Smile

Good drafting skills. The values are pretty good too, but my critique would be that everything is rendered with the same sort of plastic appearance. I think it's that everything -- flesh, metal, fabric, rock, etc -- all features the same sort of highlights; all of about the same size, strength, fall-off, and color (they all move towards the gray). This gives a flat, sort of dull finish to everything, and therefore also the pictures. If you improved your materials rendering, you'd see a very big improvement in overall quality of your work.

Thank you guys very much, Thank you Sumaleth for the tip I can see what you mean. After you mention it I can see it in this picture too! I'll try to work on that for the next one Smile
Just updating with another character concept.

I hope you dont mind I loan your last two girls.. one doing overpaint on succubus, other - loan idea for military ship. It is last time I promise I know you love your girls, Smile

however, as you said, it is lacking for material. But when I check your studies from life, it is SUPERB, Awesome! I love studies of your selfportrait.

I guess it is hard create anything "realistic" from one's own mind. It takes time.

I think you make a mistake creating image. You hurry too fast to define details, values before you feel if the light is right, it means every object has own values, colors depending on light in the scene. Material properties, shapes, gesture and the list goes on.

You have to think about differentiating soft and hard edges. There are two types of shadows: cast and form. Closest it throws out cast, put hard edge, further - softer edge (it is not always so in every case but you get idea). Form shadow has different shape depending on form. To put good edge, one has to know the form of course.

I took a challenge to overpaint your girl. This is not perfect (I suck a lot at everything hehe), but it gives idea how play around with the light.

It is important to paint loose until you find that you getting there you want. Compare that experiment to another picture like one of studies from life in your memory. Check if it is right or wrong. It is pretty much trial process, fiddle forth and back, destroy "perfect details, values" and start again if it is still not right. Do you understand what I mean? You have everything to create a good image because you have superb ability to see things, create detailed things. Experiment and memorize what you see from life as I do.

good luck!

forget my comment above, if you did intend create painting in comic style. Razz

if you want me remove my overpaint, let me know.

I think the way to push the material diferences is to first get a an idea of the value ratios (light vs. Dark) and then you can play around with texture to reach a satisfactory statement.
