I only know very basic stuff so this will be short (maybe six or so images):
1. first thing to notice is upper right; that's a list of objects that you'll see in
the main window

2. edge drag/resize the other pane (middle/bottom right stuff) to show empty
list; each object that you add to the scene will be listed there
3. still in upper right, click camera, then cube, then lamp: each one highlights
in the main/3D window
4. in the 3D window drag any object by left click/drag coloured xyz axis arrows (Ctrl+Z to undo)

Ready for action? Cool.
5. drag cube upward until it's just above the grid
6. in the upper left menu click Add/Mesh/Plane; small plane appears below the
cube (and is added to the list at right)

7. resize plane: position mouse/cursor near plane, hit S key and drag in any
direction, click to stop/set size

8. preview: F12 key (or upper left menu: Render/Render image)
Shift+F5 to return to 3D/standard view
Models/objects can be imported from Sketchup, Sculptris and likely may
others. See examples (and awesome, advanced models) in The 3D Thread:
http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=42471&start=210
Will likely add a couple more posts re adding lamps/lights and basic light
settings. Or *whom* will do that - that's why we pay him the big bucks. |

shift + a (gives you the "add" menu)
ctrl + alt + 0 ( gives you camera view wherever you change your view to, for example if you move around an object and then stop at desired view hit ctrl + alt + 0 to get the same view in your camera.)
nice stuff durgldeep.
I doubt I will ever get me the big bucks though... snif. |

thanks guys - Tomasis, I'm pretty sure Blender is designed less for artists and
more for... 'technicians'? Not sure how to describe it. Unlike painting, in
Blender there are no 'accidents' (accidental forms or discoveries)?
Anyhoo - onward. |

A good command is "ctrl a", it clears rotation to objects; cause sometimes when you mirror an object the rotation gets skewed when you mirror because it has a different rotation command in itself, not sure how that works though but when you use the command it works perfectly.
I used it a lot for my Lightcycle piece as I made mirrored parts.... |

Been meaning to check out Blender. Not for 3D, but for the 2D compositing tools. We use After Effects here, but it just feels so restrictive, coming from a Fusion/Shake node-based background. Haven't yet had a chance to see what Blender offers in that area though. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

Thanks whom. Haven't noticed any issues with mirrored objects (well, not so
far). Some rigging videos menion clearing rotation from bones but don't mention
how they got rotated to begin with - so may mysteries.
2d compositing, another mystery... Not much Blender/2d stuff on YT, this one's
Adobe After Effects:

Which might explain (always wondered how this was done):

Best way is just to throw yourself over Blender and then give it time, takes time to get comfortable with but once there you realize how powerful it is. |

Not much support for layers yet in cycles I'm afraid, but it will come I'm sure and then you gonna be able to do a lot with composite nodes again. I just wish I could get atmospheric perspective in cycles, been putting up a question about it over at cgsociety. I doubt it is possible at this time though.....
durgldeep, Have you seen the teasers with "Tears of steel"? ....the next mango project with Blender. Looks pretty cool. |

Cool whom. That's one thing I've been wondering about re Blender
(atmospheric stuff). How did you get that effect in your earlier images? ie. the
experiments on page four (fourth post):
http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=42471&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=120
One of them (earlier page) mentions GIMP?
Ran into nodes in the Cycles vid (link above). If that's "basic" stuff then I'm
much farther behind than I thought?

Thanks yea I think it might be what I've been looking for.
The older ones on page four, surprised those pictures still were there were made with Blender render and halo effect on a spot light, worked neat to get atmosphere. It was harder to control the amount with halo though as it had its own life for some weird reason.... lol.
Come to think about those pictures on page four I think it was most cheesy tricks, maybe I still do those cheesy tricks but it is a good way to experiment and perhaps learn.
not sure if I posted my lightsabre way back? That was a complicated node setup and made me scratch my head several times. I think it is best to start out simple with nodes, make a simple scene than change color with nodes and stuff. Usually to get a bump map on a material these days you gotta put your depth into a setting in the nodes setup for it to work. Nodes and rigging is very complicated.
Lol maybe we should put ourselves into a bootcamp to get ourselves in gear with it, practise makes perfect but it is hard to have focused practise cause it takes a lot of time. Usually I get caught up in modeling and not the other stuff..... |

Disappearing images, indeed. What's taken years to happen in Sijun (old pics disappearing) u've mastered in months!

Lightsabre? I would remember a lightsabre. Still got it kicking around?
Show? (this is a blender thread, after all [grin])

Guess I've now got a vague idea what a bump map is - though I don't recall
"nodes" in this one (see bump map at 10:00):

I'd say "focus" is the magic word, yep. Tho maybe that's just me, ie. have
never had time to do this before, am making up for lost time. Um,
autofocus? |
