Really cool work here from everyone, such an inspiring thread. Sparth: awesome shapes in your compositions, Quintis: definitely a fan of that horse back dude.
Not a speed paint but something been working on lately.

Looking good, England!
Tried some different things with this one. Combining very sharp brushes with smudge ones and started painting on an orange background to try and get more color variety.

T.England: thanks!
quintus: nope i haven't done any new experiments in that square style, as well as the ones with line work done in Alchemy. but i should.
creative schedule is actually so full thanks to Halo 4.
concerning your images, i think i really like the balance and flow you started to obtain with these. it clearly shows that it is most of the time not the amount of details you're going to put into a scene, but rather the smart flow and rythm of details that prevail, and how these speak to the eye.

farvus and T_England, thanks guys.
sparth, it's interesting that you say that actually because the flow was a main ingredient that I was looking for when I was doing abstract work.
You have a very good construction and simplified. ....That's something I have difficulties with, making a good construction in grand scalar and then to keep the flow. Keeps getting messed up those elements.
I was talking with Munin in the conceptart speedy thread about how I am a bad speedpainter, I need more time to develop things cause I keep changing my mind all the time when I paint.
How's your process? do you keep changing your mind finding something else as your piece develops?
Thanks again sparth, you are too kind to me.

Thanks, Tomasis!
Love the economy on that latest one, Sparth; I really like that one.
Put what I learned from that Sargent study to the test, 2.5 hour portrait from life drawing today, got two more portrait sessions ahead of me this week:

sparth-awesome, love the whole design and setup of the dock. Gonna echo what Quintus asked about big changes in the picture development, your pics have that wonderful/infuriating quality where i can't tell what came first or last or have an inkling of how it would develop!
Tomasis-thanks dude! I think that viking/pirate ship piece is worth working on further!
ili-dig the portrait, Sargent is quite the master to follow isn't he? Went to the met the other day and just stood there slack-jawed in front of a sargent for an indeterminate amount of time
something for a concept art thread on environments, its a dragon hatchery!

Thanks guys!
Quintus: i understand what you mean.
i think that at one point, you have to settle down on one scene and subject that you want to develop on your image. if you keep jumping from one idea to the next, unable to make a choice, the final result will probably suffer from these multiple process. i'm not saying everything should be clear from the start, far from it. but my own experience shows that my best images are the ones where a thoughful (and fast) concept, was planned in advance.
i would say, first find an intent, an idea. that you REALLY want to develop. passion prevails, right?
i think it is wise having at least that "intent" in mind. if you start from nothing, you end up often painting cliche stuff that belong to your own imagination, your own archetypes. (i do it very often, unfortunately!!)
Now it doesn't mean we should never "iterate" or extrapolate on a design we thought we were initially having in mind, but that we feel like changing or tweaking a bit. on the contrary, it is always vital to leave the door open to iterations, abstractions, and unplanned "events" within your image, that will give a surprising final touch.
it's all about finding the right proportion, the right balance. planning prevails, but let the "loose side of your brain" take over the image in some moments. if that makes sense.
Lemur: thanks! i guess it comes from experience. i'm not saying talent, but rather the fact style pops up more easily after the years. however, it may feel like i'm doing all that stuff with ease, which is partly true. but i still have so many areas where i feel i'm lacking a lot of knowledge. i should really focus on these fields and train!
your image is fantastic btw. there's something very successful about the choices you've done in there.
Hideyoshi: i think i'm in a "searching phase" right now. i want to find new doors, new ways of framing my images, finding concepts, and testing techniques.
on this matter i actually switched to tool presets a week ago, instead of using only brushes for selection and workflow.
i never really did the effort of creating my tool presets. it's now done. better late than never!
i think it is actually having an impact on my process in a fascinating way, as you have a faster access to everything, from custom shapes to the line tool. it helps a lot!
here's a two hours doodle done tonight with my new tool presets. it includes about ten brushes, three smudge brushes, two clone brushes, one line tool, as well as three custom shapes.

Tomasis, yea got some weeks now to be up to no good.
Lemur, wow, real cool.
sparth, yea I agree with this planned in advance cause I have made better pieces that way too.
I really appreciate the lengthy answer there.
Real cool piece too
Hmm this became messy and semi abstract

thanks dudes! (dudettes? all the dudettes went away years ago didn't they lol)
sparth- great paragraphs there! coincidentally been thinking about this stuff alot lately, and when you hear it from an experienced artist its very teaching/reinforcing. Also the practical tip on using tool presets, I've looked at it before but you convinced me to really use it. monkey read, monkey see amazing example artwork, monkey do.
MASK-those are great, have a real quality to them I feel. Also think its funny how the girl is wearing a mask and your name is mask
Hideyoshi- your entry is so awesome, I feel sorry for that guy though when big momma comes back to the nest! He'll make a fine first meal for the strongest of the dragon babies.
Quintus- kinda like what sparth was saying, the rhythm of the compositions is really cool in your pics. I remember you talking about digital glazing awhile back, and I see lots of little subtle layering that really sets of the image, so nice!
ok, a bunch of b&w crap inspired by animation and zhu zhu (found an old pic from hi, it was awesome)-

Lemur: The last time I got to stare at a Sargent up close and personal, Graydon Parrish was giving a lecture and I was torn between the two. I obviously dig his portraiture, but I love his watercolors even more. Love those thumbnails and the hatchery.
Hideyoshi, Mask, Sparth, Juharasanen, STPo: Keep up the great work, you're killing it!
Sparth, thanks for the insight; there's a lot of wise words in there.
Here's portrait two of either two or three, depending on my Saturday schedule. This time I focused a lot more on stroke economy and losing unnecessary edges:

Wow wow, just browsing this thread for the fast time after several years of abandonment and stumbled upon my username in conversation, what a nice feeling to be remembered! I definitely relate to your work Quintus, particularly one a few back with a horizontal orange glow two thirds up the image I am feeling inspired again.
Here's a sketch I did of Jack Dorsey of Twitter in a meeting with him in San Francisco! Kind of mesmerising bloke.
