Thanks guys very kind. Very Happy

Howie, I really like that one, awesome.

Lemur, wow what an honour thank you. Smile Yours sure have better flow, mine became stiff I think... mostly it was lack of things in the scene which bothered me the most.
Ah well better keep things like that in mind because it is the balance that makes a piece. The orientalist scene is very cool.

fripp-thanks! nice study, I never heard of that artist before so thanks for that too!

Quintus-thank you Smile i got frustrated cause when I looked at yours again I noticed it was alot warmer in the lights than I remembered.

Lots of times trying to get 'flow' in painting bugs me, cause its sort of the opposite from line drawing where the natural rhythm of the hand goes with the flow, in painting its like building the flow out of shapes...its weird

glitterbug-haaa mario bear! awesome!

Nide-thankya Cool this green character is very creepy!

some sort of suit guy sketch, I blob and blob and can't come up with anything, but in trying to classify the effect of light it becomes easier to resolve-

Don't have that much time these days, that's why it was better with speedy again.
Sure is a nice way to just cool down with a speedy once you get home. Twisted Evil

Howie, thank you very kind, I might change the site
sometime in the near future though. Have lost count
on how many times I have changed, on the bright side
it has taught me a lot of php code. A negative when it
comes to visitors I guess, doubt there are many viewers
on umbus.com these days. Smile

Another experiment

Thanks Lemur, that second one has some great shapes going on, I didn't see the face at first and kind of accepted it as something abstract

Love the colors quintus

great stuff guys.
Lemur, Quintus, you've been pushing this thread a lot lately. awesome effort.

here's a doodle thingie.
i basically took a photo and painted on it. i tend to do that a lot lately. it is a real learner for the brain i would say. deconstructing from an existing color pannel and perspective is addicting.

sparth, thx. Smile I really like that one, looks awesome.
I have seen that it has become more usual to use that
kind of tecnique. Do you work anything with 3d elements
in your illustrations?

More simplified stuff, hmm could perhaps be a good tecnique
in the end. I am still too much all over the place with this
tecnique though.

thanks quintus.
actually there's nothing new at using a photo, it all depends the way you use it. i think it's a very fast way to go straight to the point with your own design, and this, from the moment you're chosing the adequate resource for what you want to show. i basically keep two things from a photo: the perspective angle, and the color pannel. you can "reinterpret", and deconstruct, all the rest. if it makes sense. Smile
i have folders filled with sketches done this way, i call it "deconstruction" but you could call it anything you want. Smile it's just extremely fun taking a photo, keep perspective and tones, then put everything down like you would do in a puzzle. and then start rebuilding everything with your own sense of design and shapes.
concerning the use of 3d, i'm seeing a lot of sketchup stuff being used on a professional level. it's probably getting there slowly. however, i'm still not using it myself. but the 3d module from cs5 extended is having a lot of new funky things going on. like being able to make a mesh out of a sketch, and that kind of thing. the 3d and 2d ties are clearly starting to happen, to a certain level.
i still think you have an initial stiffness and static that you need to deal with concerning 3d, that i find really complex. but i'm sure it all depends how you engage in the 3d+2d process. it's all a question of visual choices at the very end.

really beautiful stuff guys, do you guys think as the 3d tech improves the skill needed to paint concept art by hand will diminish? Sure your always going to have to create your own compositions and ideas but do you think technology will take over the need to know perspective, rendering, etc?

Hmm not sure I dare to post another one, starting to become flood messiah in here lol.

sparth, really appreciate the description, wonderful how these latest pictures from you has this gradient flow in them.
With that said I tried to do something similar beneath but I blew it big time lol.

Howie, yea I think so if you mean that 3d will be more influential in the future, I am not a pro in any way though but I am active in Cgsociety and when one look at the things that they can do with sculpting these days I do believe it is heading for 3d in the future. More detail that way too, and almost for free aswell haha; ah well maybe not for free but it will be in the composition automatically. 3d is still very time consuming though.

thanks howie,nachoyague!

Zeus-awesome

sparth-means alot Smile I tried what you are talking about with deconstructing, always had shied away from it before since i wanted some foundational skillz before messing with photographs. Now that I've done it I think its a really great exercise, it really helps learning arrangement.

I was thinking that sometimes a great way to learn isn't just to create something from 'thin air' (as if anyone really does that lol), but to transform something-in that you use that informational inertia provided and by changing it you learn just what makes something read, and how much it can be changed before it reads as something else. It really is addictive!
