Hi All,
I've just released another free video tutorial on How to Draw Basics of a peanut butter jar and a Playstation controller. I also show a 3D model of a Playstation controller to show how one can "see" complicated shapes and break things down while drawing. The 3D program used is a free one called Blender 3D and I also do a video showing where to download it, basic navigation and links to other free video tutorials if you'd like to learn blender.
All this is on my website at:

Would love to hear people's comments and feedback. _________________ See ya on da flip side

I think it's great that you want to educate people with your tutorials. But please make sure that everything is correct in the final result. The controller drawing has perspective issues (the "ring" with the directional cross is bigger than the closer ring containing the 4 round buttons) and has a look that doesn't equal the real controller (the "handles" are shorter and more squarish looking in the drawing, and the analogue buttons look kinda ellipse- shaped). _________________ homepage:blog |

G'day Daryl - thanks for your comments and taking the time. I was in two minds about the tutorial from the outset as there are "issues" with the final look of the controller. If it was a tutorial solely about perspective and completely nailing the proportions 100% totally, I fail. But it wasn't.
Its a step before that in looking at complicated shapes and trying to break them down into something more managable. A lot of people struggle with this, even though it may be straight forward to you and I. In the West for drawing, there is an obsession with having something look real in drawing and it can be a fixation that prevents people who are learning to draw going any further... they are trying to juggle too many things before they are ready to (see a previous video about my comments on that: http://www.youtube.com/user/mattelderdotcom#p/u/8/JG5uzftaSkE )
By showing the art as being less than perfect, anyone following will hopefully see the main point of the video and hopefully then ask the question "my drawing is close but how do I make it better?". Enter perspective and proportion next. I am in no way saying foundation fundamentals shouldn't be there in drawing and think they are incredibly important.
I've had several people comment on how useful they thought the video was and helped them get over their stumbling blocks and how great they feel because of it. They are excited and want more so they can continue to learn more. One kid viewer has gone from drawing flat images to proudly sending me his drawing showing how his playstation controller was better than mine (which it was). The kid is drawing and loving his art and hope that after people watch the video, they have improved somehow.
Again, thanks for your comments and you certainly have a point. What do others think? _________________ See ya on da flip side

Matt, to me "The Basics" doesn't imply perfection. Not sure how it can be read that way. Uh, I've never even seen a playstation controller so maybe I'm not entitled to comment? [shrug]
Anyhoo, good job. Glad you're getting positive feedback (too). |
