Look at that:
Taken "live" from the actual game... I can hardly wait!

This is still beta, right??
I mean, the platforms below look like folded cardboard boxes with printed images. Don't level designers want to avoid this look?
"We only got 100 polygons for the whole level (don't wanna leave all S3 ViRGE owners in the dust), but there's nothing you can't bring out by clever use of textures. See the pipes, they appeared so 3D we decided to flatten them by doing nothing to the ends."
...or am I completely wrong? |

To be fair, that is the skybox - it's just the environment surrounding the level, you don't get to walk on or around it. But yeah, it is a little blocky. Nice textures though ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

a) yes, it's still beta - pretty beta, to be true. There's still lots of trouble with texture overlapping etc.
b) yes, it's only the env, but it is kinda like a flat platform level, so you see this in 360 around you which is very nice (the clouds are also moving, if I remember correctly)
c) there is lots and lots of detail on the ground (e.g. the dirt is VERY nice) but there's other textures where I'm missing details (I'm a bit disappointed about the water, but again: water is supposed to be the most difficult thing to render)
d) also true: while some things like human faces or weapons have lots and lots of polygons there are other things like stones, hills, etc. which consist of only a few (and look pretty much like the Jedi Knight II style)
=> the overall impression is pretty positive though. but they gotta work on performance and those few blocky things I mentioned.
it's hard to capture that in a screenshot though

I dunno..
I played the *cough*tech release*cough* a while ago and I found that it just looks like a modified Quake 3.
that was seriously my first thought when I was running around. Quake 3 with a few more poly's.
now Im not saying that when its done its not gonna rock.. but so far from what Ive seen.. Its nothing new. |

i think i played that tech release too.. the one at e3. it was like, yeah what Awetopsy said, quake 3 with more polygons. it wasn't bad, i guess, but it felt like playing UT all over again.
i sure hope they really work on those cool environments they were [nervously] talking about in this interview on a games tv show - that would be the 'kicker' as they say.. |

The game will be alright. The detail is good, and in some places the maps looks pre-rendered (very good shadows and materials).
I think i played American Army with that engine, and they didn't make a very good use of it, but as i see it there are some great improvements over UT for the mods.
I still hope HL2 will be a blastin' great game (technology-wise) although nobody ever hears anything about it, it is in development (which is a good thing). |

Me not being a gaming pro, I don't see the differences between Quake and Unreal and all those other ES anyway (except for the maps). I don't actually play them either except for LAN sessions with some friends.
BTW, do you know the Super Mario Map in Q3 (CTF)? It's awesome, I had to laugh all the time and couldn't shoot *lol* |

Games 2 years ago = low poly, low quality textures
games today = 2 additional poly, 100000000 x 100000000px textures. |

I think it looks pretty good. Of course, there's ALWAYS better to be made, but, during production, certain decisions must be made, and whatever happens happens. I do think they could have made those details below look a little better with some real DOT3 lighting instead of baked in shading. Overall, a good effort. |

The new engine will be pretty kick ass, especially for us mappers, but forget about UT2k3. The game's lame, so to say. The shot you posted is the best example you can find. I can't believe that anybody likes it
The towers in the back are just a skybox, so you won't see much of it, believe me, ut2k3 looks damn ghey ingame.
Well, my two cents... |

Actually i really like some art in that game. Q3 i totally hated, but textures were super-awsome works of art. I just opened .pak files and stared at the textures
With UT2003 the player models look very good (that killer-clown guy is awsome) and weapon models are meaty. I think the FPS games going into multiplayer so much kinda sucks. FPS should stick to single player as their main focus until they can offer something more than DM and CTF (im talking about EverQuest-more, not InstaGib DM or Threewave CTF hehe).
Anyways it doesn't matter, if UT2003 doesn't rock, next thing is HL2 ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

That's exactly what Doom 3 is aimin for. And if you haven't seen the video previews for that yet, i strongly advise you NOT to. That game will make every other game look like pure 100% crap. |

With id i'll be cautious.. i thought Q3 would be super-rocking-game-of-all-time but ehh.. not really, so with Doom3 i'm just waiting to see. |

Venim: Uh, bumpmapping is a nice thing, but they could add some base textures, the playermodels look like licked ice cream. Basically, I don't like SP (Singleplayer) games where I feel bad or afraid. So, no Doom for me...
Shizo: Mhh, some less ugly, more mainstream-models would be better But I agree with you, I hate Multiplayer games, I rather enjoy Jedi Knight or Soldier of Fortune against stupid enemies than being shot down by anonymous people from countries I can't even spell! |

Im not much of an online Gamer myself.
I used to play CS all the time... now Im just bored of it.
I love Jedi Multiplayer tho. Duel, no force, no weaps... just you, your lightsaber and meat called "your opponent".
I love non-pure servers so you can download all the new models and maps etc... ie. Yoda, Jar Jar, Jango and Boba Fett, Han Solo, Roger robots, the Emperor, Darth Vader, almost all the Jedi Council, Chewbacca, all the saber hilts, JediMod 2++.....
ahhhh i love that game. |

JK II is like the greatest 3rdperson Game I've ever played. I awaited it with mixed expections cuz I'm a real oldskool jedi knight player, and I wasn't dissapointed. But as far as MP Mode goes, no, I don't like it. The sabre-fights are kinda uncontrolled... But Singleplayer, jeez, that's a nice game! |

True. JKII was the only game ever (well PC game, I'm not talking about my heroic days with the GameBoy ) I played all the way through without Cheats. Well, maybe I just got better over time (I think Level 7 or 8 was the best I did in Doom 2 without Cheats) but JKII was finally something with an interesting enough story and finally got me "into the mood".
PS: Now I'm also reading my old SW books again (Heir to the Empire etc.) - heck, this is fun! |
