Hopefully he will paint! Often times judging by last years, the gnomon master classes are more like talks where the artists discuss there work, carrers and philosophy.. Still will be very interesting to hear his opinions, if he paints that will be very cool indeed.
Anyone catch his interview in imagine FX? I noticed his working style/technique seemed to have moved on a bit. In one new image it actually reminded me of Jaime Jones stuff. _________________ www.tenglandsketchbook.blogspot.com

jr, yeah there will :> but as mikko says it will be an online class so I guess the video will only be running for as long as the master classes are.
even so. its an awesome opportunity to see the man. |

Hey Daryl,
Yes, it's def. worth the money. Quite an eye opening stuff he said. And all the other instructors are great as well! _________________ http://kanmuftic.blogspot.com/ |

It was very good. It seems like only few of those (16?) instructors really understood what "Master class" means, and Im glad Craig did. Well at least in my opinion Master class is not about basics of a software or how do you model a drain pipe..
I wouldve been highly disappointed if Craig had shown him paint and nothing more.. Well he did make a painting in the last chapter where he brought his thoughts to practice, but every other lesson was basically audio only, where he made some very interesting ideas how to improve your craft. And I think that these thoughts doesnt apply only to painting, but art in general. Ive actually applied some of those thoughts to level design, and it works beautifully.
It would have been also very interesting to participate to Iains lessons, but unfortunately Im so busy at work that I just didnt have the time. Well.. I wrote down his tasks so Ill do them later when I get some time. Im sure I will learn much just by doing, even tho it is without instructor. |

Really wanted to sign up for this, but I'm saving towards a wedding, so wasn't able to spend the cash.
There is an interview with Mullins in the latest ImagineFX magazine, for those interested. Issue number 50. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

most of the insights from the class were actually things he talked about on these very forums (playing up contrasts, what good design is, drawing being the totality of a picture), just more focused and in depth (i guess hes had a few years to think on it since we last knew him)-it was kindof strange hearing the actual voice of spoogedemon-he really should have a show like Bob Ross did, very interesting hearing him speak.
I just want to see some of his newer work, very curious since all the new stuff from him ive seen has been thumbnails |

Niiiice.
I'm surprised he did the IFX interview--since he's been a recluse for the last few years (besides teaching Massive Black live workshops). |

haha, sweet, i finally see it in full reso. Lookit all them cars, they look like little little fishy's in a pond.
Yea the gnomon thing. Im pretty disappointing. I was expecting, some very good solid artwork, and entertainment. But really. its very bland.. Nothing enthusiastic!
Like come on. Maybe mullins needs to take some teaching lessons, becuase its suppose to have some funnies in it. A joke here and there would be pretty kewl. One of the lessons your staring into a blank canvas all he dose is talk.. And talk and talk.
Like come on Drawz something, His examples that he draws are horrible.
This is what one of his tutorials look like... And this happens not once not twice, but a couple of times.
You want to be Clear and precise and straight to the point. If anything he should just calm himself before he begins to teach, and just be real with the hommies.
I was hoping for some basic detailed examples. Some figure drawing? some concept layouts, you know. Maybe even just a Brain storm of ideas. If hes gunna paint, cut out the nonsense, and demonstrate the purpose of each segment or step. Its not really visible. If anything these videos will demonstrate a lack.. of creativeness..
But one thing that is most impressive is the brush's he uses. I still dont know how to use photoshop brushs.

Craig sounded relaxed in his presentation, and offered plenty of good advice. There's a reason it's called a Master Class and not a tutorial - it's aimed at proficient artists, many of whom are working professionals in the industry, and not so much for hobbiests and lay-people (although they'll learn a lot too if they'll slow down, drop their own expectations, and *listen*). Perhaps once you have more experience under your belt you'll have a better appreciation for what he was saying. I don't mean that as an insult or anything, but you're basically saying it sucked, which it didn't. _________________ -Anthony

Actually. After going through the videos. Alot makes sense.. Becuase Ive been focusing more on detail on some of my newer paintings, that I work on during the course of the week that i started doing.
One of the most valuable things that ive learned from the lessons is that most production companies want art that is photo realistic. And that makes incredible sense now that i think of it.
But alot of the other things makes no sense. Becuase he states in some other theories that he dosnt like music while painting. Which, I enjoy doing when i am painting, becuase it further excites me when im listening to techno or hard rock. Then he states that you are licking the painting at some points, And I find that licking paintings is actually a good thing to pass the time. So i say. LICK AWAY !!! |

I'm glad he didnt just paint some stuff like in all the other dvd. You dont learn a thing by just watching a guy paint. Craig shared some of his invaluable insights on art. I learned alot from his class. How to appreciate modern art, abstract art, how to approach paintings in different ways, how important experimenting is, how important an open mind is. Seriously its one of the best classes you'll find online.
If you dont realize it now, you will in a couple of years.
The reason he doesnt like music while painting is because it takes away concentration. Your brain cant focus a 100% on the art because it needs to listen to music at the same time. I hear it alot from other artists that its best to leave the music off while doing studies. |

To me it really depends what I'm drawing. If I'm drawing some very technical stuff where you really have to think all the time, I really can't listen to music at the same time, but if I'm doing mood concepts, music is required. Actually It's very difficult to do mood concept without music. |

i think i read in the Social Animal that people perform simple, familiar tasks better with some amount of cognitive dissonance or emotional distraction, while when they are really trying to figure something new out the opposite is true.
When I think about it as far as Craig's "style" goes (more like a style of thought) he is always trying to come up with new stuff and new ways to do things procedurally-I think music might get in the way when you are switching gears so much.
My biggest enemy to concentration hasn't ever been music so much as when i start to drift away on social thoughts and stop reacting to the picture I'm trying to paint. When I stop using the imagination just sort of start thinking about random B.S. instead of the constant whywhywhywhy thats gotta happen for a good picture to come about |

I personally like music when I'm working although one thing I've noticed is music with vocals tends to distract me a bit, so I usually don't put anything with singing on whilst I work. |
