There is a texting number to send an automatic $10 donation to Haiti Relief. 90999

I often text to a phone number, but have never texted to a 5 digit number. Now, as I try, I keep getting an error message. So... on an iPhone, how do you text to 90999 ?

I sound so stupid.... Confused

I thought someone would answer this right away - guess not. Google doesn't seem to know the answer either - but apparently the carrier matters more than type of phone:

"I don't know if I am just nto educated or not, but am I supposed to do something different when I text message 5 digit numbers?"

"no, just put in the digits. It may not be supported by your carrier if it does not work. I have Cingular, works for me."

I figured it out... It is a two part process. The number and a keyword. In this case I didn't understand that I needed to type in "Haiti" in the comment box after typing 90999 into the TO: box...

By the way, I just read that about 5.5 million dollars have been raised with people texting to the number... in $10 increments. Pretty amazing...

Hehe, I noticed the "Haiti" part and wondered briefly - I'm a dufus re cell phones (don't need one anyhow).

Very cool re 5.5 million. Have been watching the news every few hours; sad, gripping, etc...

Port-au-Prince report, speaks for itself:

As night falls, many Haitians prepare to spend another night outdoors. In a different part of town the forecourt of a petrol station is quiet, apart from the hundreds of people just milling about.

Across the road a woman sits in front of huge pans full of rice and chicken.

As I watch a man approaches me and says: "Most people can't afford to buy food. We need help."

Given the situation, I think that's, um, remarkable?

Very informative (for those who are interesed) point-by-point outline re "Handling a crisis on the scale of Haiti" http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8466595.stm

eyewoo, sorry for hijacking your thread. Haiti isn't mentioned elsewhere (that I've noticed) and I tend to think using an existing topic is better than creating a new one (so many here already).

No problem... do not consider it hijacked...

Yes... I believe the amount collected so far is over 25 million. I've also heard the phone companies are turning the money over immediately without waiting for their customers to pay bills.
