Break out the Chimay beer and cheeses. It has been a very long time since I've posted anything in the gallery. Lately I've had time on my hands and been reading/studying on some techniques of Scott Robertson, Harold Belker and others, so here's my hover car thingamajig; the perspective is a bit wonked on the driver in relation to other points, but hey - at least I'm posting - right? The original was a pencil sketch, scanned and then layer composited in Photoshop:

Hopefully more to come . . .

Nice. Art by Tom! : )
I like your speeder. Solid design. And the guy is also cool.
For a pure concept painting that's enough. However some cool background elements could make this image more interesting. I dunno, some birds, mountains, a Palm, whatever,... Very Happy

Good work

Max - thanks!

I actually had thought that the inclusion of some background objects would create more interest, but I rushed it so as to get posted. Why rush? I dunno . . . it wasn't like I was under a deadline or something. Smile

LOL! Well I have posted stuff in the past - kinda way back. My present day experience is consumed by experience design and UI design for sites and web based applications, but concept art has always and will be a love of mine.

I can draw and conceptually draft; however, painting is something I was good at, sucked at and now trying to reclaim. I've had some life changing events of late, which have spurned me to get off my ass and get busy. Smile

I wonder if something could be done to the composition to emphasize the speed a bit more. Say, add some space to the left, or maybe even both sides. Also the driver seems to be enjoying a pretty leisurely drive, but the design of the machine and the strong motion blur tell me it's a bit of a faster drive?

Well here I am again. It's been over two years since any real serious posting. I stumbled across the inital PSD that the posted image was based on and did a quick revision. Woot.

Hehe, the dirt cloud (at right) really cranks it up. Smile Maybe add perspective to the tops of the buildings?

Looks good man! Your materials are a little off I think. Based on the rather mild level of specularity and reflectivity you should have more diffuse shading. That is, more contrast in the body of the craft to define its form. Usually in vehicles you use either value contrast or reflections/specular highlights to define the form (always both, but one or the other may take precedence. Refer to Scott Robertson's tutorials for info on that. Smile

Looking good Tom!

I find some of the form a little tricky to discern. This may partly be shading (as suggested) but I wonder if a more 3/4 view might show the form better (in terms of concept art). It is an irregular shape, so needs a few extra visual cues to improve readability.
