Ok the contest is up.
The theme is Colossus and you may interpret it the way you see fit.
Colossus - 3rd of August - 31st of August
Good luck everyone and remember to have fun.
Let's keep this contest open, which means everyone can join til the deadlline.
When the deadline has been reached there will be a poll voting system, this way everyone can vote on their favourite. The one with most votes will be the winner.
You can post your entry at any time, and post updates right up until the deadline. A new voting thread will be created with the latest version of each entry. |

It was discussed upon the duration of the contest and we agreed to shorten the work period. This gives the contest to the end of the month 31st Of August.
I hope this works with everyone.
Anyone can participate in here, also post your sketches in here if you want. Not obligated however.
This thread will be open for discussion regarding the theme, so ask questions in here.
There will be a new Voting Thread created after the contest, where we will add a poll voting system to that specific thread.
Btw in that thread, it would be appreciated if only participants posted their works and nothing else.
An idea from SampsonReaper.
Thanks again people.
Let's get it on. |

So people have you come up with any ideas yet?
I started to experiment today with an idea I got early on when we talked about themes.
At first I added wings but those were discarded lol.
Still got a lot of problems all around, I kept changing the perspective 50 times. Thought about to have a side view of the horse....
My idea here is that it supposed to be a remnant from an old society, Thinking about to make it 19th century where it takes place in the piece. People standing around and viewing the coloss. hmm?
Might need some other sketches.
Guess I have some ideas with some kind of futuristic thing instead.
We'll see tomorrow, next sketch session.
Think it could work with the sketch but I want dramatic view, damn.
this is only a sketch btw:

Godzilla Was Matthew> that look interesting. More more. Haa.
Took out a little time from my work to do a quicky too. My pet colossus in my backyard. Haa. Think i'll be experimenting more before i fix myself up with any idea. Will be looking forward to everyone's idea.

Flaskpost, thanks for joining, looks interesting there for sure.
Perhaps the idea is not so important but oh well I am rambling about it a little bit more anyway...lol
Looked up on old Babylon statues and stuff but they were more box shaped than I thought they were gonna be, that which is still around though.
Think about 19th century all together now instead.
The horse was killing me, shaped the head back and forth. Didn't wanna lose some kind of dynamic, if the piece ever had one to begin with.
Now I am thinking about some kind of fantasy 19th century, have to come up with some kind of weird looking animal, maybe evil is the answer.
Lately I have just worked on the mood and colors of the piece.
Lol I am so gonna lose this contest haha.
Think adding humans in this piece later on will kill or save this piece, with it making it look like a colossus. This is what I think at the moment anyway.
hmm. |

RayToh: that's great.
Flaskpost: I like the first one.
Godzilla: The difficulty you're going to have, with that very high camera position, is making the scene look massive and not miniature. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Godzilla Was Matthew> I did alot of random sketches too once in a while, haa, like the one you showed me through the messaging function but alot of mine suxz big time. I keep telling myself it's a good thing since it make me realise like there's so much thing i need to improve on. There's actually one qn i've been wanting to ask. Do u use alot of glazing? I mean digital glazing. Like i tried but i seem to be stuck by doing the paint by number problem. Like i feel the color you have is so flowy and nice but i'm not sure how i should hmm.~ construct this qn. Ha. Hope this make any sense to you. But mainly i'm kind of trying out glazing and see what can it do. I guess i'm still not very unfamilar with this method yet. Will try and explore more. Hallll. Anyway the wip piece is looking real good. I'm digging the second piece alot.
Flaskpost> Gonna agree with sumaleth that the first one have potential. I'm also digging the one on the right in the middle roll. That would put up a lot of room to experiment with the design and the possible texture and feeling the Colossus may give. Will be looking forward to more.
Sumaleth> Thanks man.
Colossus on the loose.~!

Sumaleth, thanks, yea that is gonna be difficult for sure. My thinking at the moment is that once I add humans it will hopefully work.
Lol can never be sure.
Raytoh, thank you. yea I do a lot of glazing, small changes. Not always succesful with it though but the only way is to experiment with it.
In decorative painting we had small exercises with glazing.
Old masters had a real grasp at this, I really think it is just as useful in digital painting.
Btw yea quickies are good, especially if you fuck up in them cause you tend to learn from mistakes, that's my thinking about it anyway.
Maybe the reason why I like to do scribbles.
I made a quick color test with yours beneath Raytoh. May I be so bold to suggest warm against cold, this way you are gonna be able to focus on the colossus more, or display it more.
I assume you are familiar with complimentary color system? What I find difficult is the amount of colors, glazing though keeps it tied together better. Making it rather a whole instead of breaking the two too much separate, u understand? Usually there's cold against warm, dark against light and big against small. U remember when I talked about strokes?
Sorry about my rambling here, way too much I think.
Glazing exercise, more difficult to display the exercise digitally so it doesn't look that great beneath.
It is usually used to see what kind of effect different Umbers have on a variety of colors.
quick color test with yours Raytoh
keep up the good work people. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Hey Godzilla Was Matthew, Thanks~!! Really appreciate you took the time to explain. I guess the key is really to try more? and get to undrestand the amount i should use to create certain looks? Quoting from this sentense

The problem that i face is, it keeps turning out like two separate things. Haa. So, i guess i need to work hard and try try try. And yah i do rememeber the stroke you mention previously but getting use is really tricky thing by itself too. And naa. No rambling man. It's really nice to see how different people think when approaching a painting. And the chart helps me to understand what you are talking about. It's kind of a traditional thingy, right? Trying out colors before applying it on the actual canvas. Anwyay the tryout you did looks real cool. Oohohoh. I'll try my best.~! Thanks Thanks.~! _________________ www.raytoh.com

So how's it going people?
U know William Turner sometimes used to wait until the last few days when there was an exhibition, thus could he look at all the pieces at place and then usually he would paint his own pieces more vibrant than everyone else. Genious
Think there was a watercolor piece portraying Turner at an exhibit, I wrote an essay about him once... |

Awesome guys, thanks for joining.
Thought I could show you guys where I am at the moment.
As it is now the backdrop is killing me.
Tried more details but it keeps taking away way too much attention, so at the moment I have toned it down.
Tweaked the colors some more and worked up some glazing on the clouds.
Roughed in a stagecoach... as what I think it might look like lol.
Scale is gonna be a problem I think overall and on the backdrop.
*Need to do list; add and detail humans, detail the stagecoach.
Ah hell we'll see:
And yea and I'm not sure if the creature maybe came alive?
damn it lol
Keep up guys and thanks for joining the contest. |

Got some comments on my piece so I am rebooting the idea a little. Always good to get second opinions and I really didn't like what I had so far.
Wanna bend it and that was actually the intention in the
beginning, so for now I eyeballed it a little.
Thanks for joining guys, really awesome to see all the ideas you guys have.
Very good everyone.

lol am I starting shizophonic on you guys? haha
I guess this is how I usually work you know, I can start out with a car in my speedies and then turn it into an apple and end up with a robot lol.
I wanted to break the usual I do so that's why I chosed a bird perspective.
yesterday I had another sketch I posted in my sketchbook before I deleted them statues:
Adding a few ideas back and forth at the moment: did a quick test based on above composition. Gonna center everything though. hmm.
Will mess around with it during the weekend. |

Godzilla Was Matthew> It look much more epric now, after you widen the shot.
The Insane Lemur> I like the first one. Got some feel to it. Interesting.
The second one look interesting too. But i guess after you revisit it, it will look even better.
Been kind of busy and stress with work lately. Ha. So. Just something random.

I was just waiting for my baked potato to bake, but now it's going cold.
Cool cool, fun thread.
Painted extremely low contrast (as has become habit) and then auto levelsed.

Lovely stuff guys.
I have worked some more but finding it hard to find time, bad excuse.
Think I will go with this composition.
Some cast shadows are wrong and now I have to decide what to keep lose and what not.
Thanks for joining everyone.
Now it is roughly a little more than a week to go. Your latest post with a picture will be used in the voting. There will be a poll voting system set up by the moderators.
keep up the good work everyone.

Btw guys I have been meaning to show yout this, it is from "aarhus" in Denmark. I was there and saw this boy live roughly two years ago on a workshop held at a barn not long from the musuem.
Me and a friend just stood and gazed at it, thought the boy was real and at the same time imagining how fucked up it would be if it were real lol.
the picture is from the museums website, but I think it really needs to be seen live to understand how huge that thing really is.
