welcome ismo
I dunno farvus, I like the brush work on that one.
Probably my favorite movie growing up was "the thing" 80's remake. I started these characters about two years ago and totally forgot about them. Decided to paint over them tonight.

Wow. Last few pages is very interesting, the work, the conversation and all. I'll be defintely looking out for Cicinimo's video tutorial. T_T
Matthew Is Godzilla > Ha. Thanks for liking the last few pieces. The fact is, i am trying out ur method of thinking. I feel it's a good way to be loose and creative and work out a tonal study base on your method. Ha. So if you say you like the painting style, it's your doing.~! Haa. But i like the way you did the last few pieces. Although abstract in shape, there is a feeling of scale and mood.
There is so many nice piece to mention here, i really don't know where to start. Fripp, octavian, The Insane Lemur, Torstein Nordstrand, ZUPZUP, syarul in fact everyone who posted and of cos Samsonsreaper included.
Cicinimo > I totally understand the part you said about slowing down and learning to see more. I only started to realise this recently after reading and trying to digest Rockwell's How i make a picture, but i'm still struggling to try to slow down and see more. In area like copying the old master's work and preparing references and doing studies. I really like your stuff alot. There's this not so overwork kind of feelng to it and yet it feel finish and alive and not mention your usage of color. T_T
Oh and i nearly miss JOuey. Great stuff as usual.
A piece for today. For Matthew. Ha. Cheers.

Matthew: I care about the strength of my compositions on an abstract level, so it sounds like we have some overlap there. I also want a personal style that separates me from my influences. I don't know that it is something I'll "find" so much as something that will develop naturally over time (hopefully that distinction makes sense).
I completely agree with you here:

At low detail stage you can develop so much more with your piece because the balance hasn't gone interrupt yet. |
I'm all for working from general to specific and I'm always fighting the tendency to noodle with details prematurely. Its so important to give proper time and thought to your large masses and the strength of their arrangement.
Not sure about this:
Matthew Is Godzilla wrote: |
But detail to me is only that, and you cannot develop it more. |
Strong abstract design and thoughtful draftsmanship aren't mutually exclusive. http://z.about.com/d/arthistory/1/0/d/Q/amerinpar_34.jpg There is plenty of detail here, but the abstract design of the image is stronger for it.
I have no problem with someone that wants to focus on abstract design at the exclusion of other stuff. But it seems difficult to earn a living with those priorities, and most of us here are aiming for a career in illustration. That's why I see value in drawing, industrial design, and the ability to take a painting past the block-in stage. I think skills like that open doors for storytelling and expression, and they put food on the table .
Samson: Thanks man! I put a little more umph in those shadows, hopefully that shows for you if you refresh the page. Nice piece!
Lemur: Hahaha, yeah its spelled with a B and then about 8 vowels in a row. I can never get it. He's not my favorite but he was the ultimate genius in a few ways. Great to study!
RayToh: Thanks! Your effort is obvious, I'm loving your stuff.
Thanks everyone else for the inspiration and conversation!
Some older thumbs:

RayToh, lol, thank you.
Cicinimo, Perhaps I will try some detail when I get back, cannot promise anything though cause my interest keeps changing when I paint and the outcome is what it is. lol.
Btw what is your thinking regarding materials and their different values? There can be bright in shadow...and dark in light depending of the value in the material. Find that more interesting.
Going for vacation one week, will be back next week.
As mentioned, thanks guys for the conversation.

Cicinimo - Btw I was a bit short above. There's more to expand on the subject with detail and I think I keep babbling about wrong things.
Could be dangerous to reveal too much lol, but yea.
Detail should be categorized to be understood. First you have the detail that has a real finish, polished. The kind of detail that I can't stand lol.
Then you have the kind of detail that is correct and placed correct, to me that becomes to repeated, expected if you will.
Then you have the intruiging one, the sloppy which perhaps could be called shaky detail. But what I am talking about now is not the same as noodled detail that is polished up....
This is just what I have found out though during years of experimenting and what has been taught to me along the way.
..Rather hard to explain in words cause I know what I mean but to pass it on to you guys is hard.
The style can be found in the sloppy though because that is where you bend curves and make the strokes flow. And that's the low detail stage I am talking about. Perhaps details are in the simplified but you have to make them felt instead of roughed out in the piece.
Don't you find that interesting? the subtle?
ok ok gotta go, back next week. |

my 8 hr bouguereau- learned more from what I did wrong than anything-I will try another soon, because i feel like I didn't analyze it right, didn't get the variety and what I understood into it- just tried to polish and it falls into the boring. I think I'm focusing on the output too much and need to fall into the joy of observation thought for painting to work.

Hi Matthew, started quite a nice discussion here. If im not mistaken i take it your after an impressionistic type aesthetic, suggested detail, inviting the viewer to fill in the gaps. It makes a lot of sense, it allows an approach to images that would otherwise be next to impossible or very time consuming to manifest. I suppose to a large degree it enables an artist to be far more ambitious with subject, and arguably is more akin to how we actually perceive the world at a point in time, of small range of tight focus, and a peripheral. Therefore these "loose" type images can really put us there in the moment.
However in my humble opinion the limiting factor will always be the draftsmanship, the less information you have the more accurate it must be, to know how to create a face at the flick of a brush, you really need to know form to get suggested detail you really need to know edges, and use your draftsmanship to tie it all together, The better you get at the above the better the loose work will be, not to mention having gained the core skills studios need for creating model sheets and prop designs if thats what your after.
Sketch from tonight trying the above. Must study and draw with pencil more

Nice study med, faces are difficult :/, Lemur, thats awesome, maybe it just needs up-rez so you can really get into the thick of the subtle nuances, but yeah jesus i can imagine that taking a while to complete Jamie you have been a massive inspiration for me, love the light in the street scene, cheers!
Some sergeant copies from the past few months, ive actually only ever done studies from sergeant, i think its time to widen what i study. They numbered sequentially the first few i did were epic fails, but anyway hehe
The orchestra sketch from sergeant was a really great study for suggested details and edges. His marks are so precise.

Cicinimo - you are amazing. It's great having you around on here and I cant thank you enough for your brushes mate. They are insanely fun!! Keep posting!
Matthew - I love your style dude.
Lemur - Great studies and attitude. I need to be more like you and follow a guideline, ie - study the masters more and look at the painting for way longer. Observation definitely improves the stroke economy, as you proved with your latest one. Great stuff.
maybe shouldnt post it, but i love the colours I came away.
