Man this page is too great! Every post has something exciting.
Matthew: Instead of speaking for the others I'll just describe my reaction. I love the more resolved speedy you posted on the last page because of its variety (generally speaking to the surface of the painting) and because you took the drawing a step beyond some of your previous work. The variety moves my eye around the image and is stimulating, while the more resolved drawing/details lend to storytelling. I can start to discern the space and imagine what might be happening there. That's exciting for me...because those are my personal priorities in illustration. So to chalk it up to a bit more detail isn't very fair to the viewer, or to your own skills .

ZUPZUP: thanks for the advice
Cicinimo: how do you do that? I'm in awe. It seems no matter how much I try, (and I paint and draw all day, everyday) I'll not understand how to break through to the level of quality I want to achieve in my work. you're fortunate to be blessed with such talent.
I'm sure a lot of us suffer from this, but I know when my work isn't good enough, It's just that I can't figure out how to get it to a "good" stage. I suppose my self critique and problem solving process is bad. I mean sure, after I put down my initial masses, I could get reference out to draw the horses correctly etc... but that usually ends in my paintings looking overworked.
a big problem I'm having is controlling photoshop and edges. I can't seem to ever get a crisp line unless I use the round brush. and even then I get weird opacity issues that cause it to "stripe" or get soft edges. anyone else have this issue? For instance, when painting with gouache, I can use a brush to get a confident line, but in photoshop, it's nearly impossible with the opacity settings turned on to "pen pressure"
These may be unanswerable questions, so I guess this is a rhetorical - I just crapped myself - Jaime makes me want to quit painting (again) - asspats - post.
here is a 25 min sketch. I can't bother to work on it anymore because I would be noodling mindlessly trying to fix what I don't know is wrong. again, feel free to critique if you want and help me out. I'm open to it so I can improve.

cicinimo- when you say "resolved" what exactly do you mean? I kindof have an idea of what you say but your brain is big while mine is small, and itd be nice to hear some more thoughts on this...wonderful painting by the way-all success in storytelling and quality.
a couple crappy acrylics to warm myself up-feel like I need strong priorities for painting-like schmid says WHY, what, then how...painted one with an old toothbrush-surprisingly a good tool, it holds a lot of water and is good for large spaces

Udal: thanks. interesting colors.. it feels very much like a watercolor.
over on James Gurney's blog he posted some notes from some of Howard Pyle's students. Here are some quotes I find interesting... do you agree with them?
"The study of edges is the main thing, outside of tones."
"Forget your drawing and stick to tone. If you get balled up on a part of picture, go back to the tone and dont rely on drawing."
"After picture is right in tone, finish up by studying edges and keep your shadows out of the light."
would like to hear thoughts...

octavian: You stuff is killer. The fact that you seem so ashamed of it is proof to me that you will break through whatever you feel is holding you back, if you haven't already. We should talk more on AIM.
Insane Lemur: Love the studies you're doing! By resolve, I just mean taking a painting to the next level of completion. For me its important to spend plenty of time with an image. There is a lot of stuff that I only begin to see and understand at the 3rd of 4th hour of a painting. With really finished work I'm still having those ah-ha moments at the 20th hour.
When I do 1 hour sketches over and over again I find myself reaching in to a very small bag of tricks and solving things in the same way again and again. I think there is value in slowing down and digging deeper.
Try spending 1 hour copying a bouguereau, then spend 8 hours copying a portion of a bouguereau. When I did this I saw many things in the 8 hour copy that I was completely unaware of in the 1 hour study (hue shifts, contour details, rhythm of shapes).
So I guess by resolve I mean tackling all the stuff I'm inclined to ignore or bury under gimmicks.
Syarul: Love that painting! Yeah I'll put together a brush tutorial some time.

Just a quick speedy to interact, might do another one later.
I might emphasise again the importance of a personal style, as I said before in that composition thread octavian did. But then again what is personal style nowadays? hard to get by; especially when most things have been done already. That's why it is probably even more important, I think?
It might interest you guys that I am throwing everything I paint away, Recycle all the digital lol well yea even the traditional I did, that's another story....
Cicinimo - Appreciate you taking the time, I understand where you come from. I think you might find it interesting that I actually found a personal style that could work.
I stopped painting though so it got sidertracked.
But detail to me is only that, and you cannot develop it more. At low detail stage you can develop so much more with your piece because the balance hasn't gone interrupt yet. I think we are interested in different things in painting lol. what u think?
Octavian - I think you worry to much about the result. There's a common theme in your work though that holds you back, at least I think?
Think you would benefit from doing a simple piece. Do it again in different angles and then chose one, work in the details that you do.
Well every painter has his comfort zone he has to break.
damn, I have been typing too much already. Gotta fix some dinner.

Matthew: I believe you asked about my opinion of abstract painting?
I see it as a great tool for blocking out composition, initial hints of key lights and object colors. And for improving all those things painting abstract is great(of course its not only abstract because you want to convey certain things tied to realism). And its great fun because the subject is so dynamic in this stage.
Awesome ones Jaime! i can see your composition is getting stronger. just the idea of picking the strong red dress against the white wall, and then the character almost silhouette on the left, creates good focal balance. In my humble opinion i think you are going a bit too soft some times for the shaded areas, colorwise.

Great stuff everyone. Cicinimo: WOW! All the environments in this thread are always so inspirational!
First one was done from imagination and the second was done using ref from G.I. Joe trailer. There was a falling Eiffel Tower, but I drew it really bad so I just erased it.
Wow, I just noticed you can still see where I made a layer for a little glow and erased it from the Eiffel Tower _________________ DeviantART

Oh my lord!!! artgasm all over this page. WHAT is happening here?!
Sparth: merci beaucoup! as you are literally one of my favorite artists of all time, you can imagine how much that means to me.
Cicinimo: Thank you jaime. I'm gonna say what I said to sparth, you are such an inspiration... I'm honored. and again, you paint something that is from another time. it's like the rebirth of Gerome in you.
Zup ZUp: that piece is fuckin astonishing! and thank you... you have a really nice brush set... mmmm
Matthew: I think you are right. But it's gonna take big balls... something you have, but I seemingly lack. I am trying to be less "literal" in my works.
Sampsonsreaper, Jouey, Torstein, Syarul, Raytoh
all I have right now, is an old piece from work.. but it was done quick on top of 3d blocks, does that count? also adding a tradigital gouache from my backyard. I am having a really hard time handling yellow paint. can't seem to ever get the right hue.

amazing page for sure!
Jaime-thank you for the advice! I never even knew about Bougeroughfuahd before, thanks for that too!
Matthew- i've been thinking about personal style lately, but I think your style is gonna be your style nomatter what you do-I believe people can limit their style somehow, but perhaps the best thing would be to learn from everything as much as possible so all the influence will become something new- instead of falling off balance into some gimmick... sry I keep bothering you
nice sampson,ZUPZUP
octavian-you will improve greatly, then you will look back and see me lagging behind out of breath lol
my 1hr copy of boug's pic where the ladys are tryin to get freaky with the fawn guy, 45 min acrylic and then corrected my shitty scan 20 min in ps.
my 8 hour one will be done sometime tomorrow- expecting to learn alot!
