damn toast!
i feel life painting is helping to give me a better understanding- before id always try to paint the hard stuff without understanding it, now i paint the kindergarden obvious easy stuff and it becomes easier and easier to visualize the subtle weird shit. So maybe one of the keys to painting is to assume youre a dumbass from the start and act accordingly...

really awesome stuff in here.
Toast, I dig that forest paint.
Lemur: I'm not sure I know exactly what you're saying, but if I do... I totally agree Nice painting too, you're improving fast!
Painting outside is my new best friend. this is a first attempt at gouache with a little photshop mixed in to do the things I couldn't get right with the medium. I won't show the other disasters I created
The cool thing is that gouache is a surprisingly fast medium to work with.
it might be fun to start all my sketches with gouache and then finish them in photoshop. hmmm

phew, rough crowd in here
another gouache from photo ref I took. Man I've missed traditional media
There is soooo much life in real paint and brush strokes. Just doing these studies today made me realize what my photoshop work is lacking... me thinks.

Insane Lemur - I like your attitude. Feels almost like the old days when you interact in the speedy with your thoughts.
I Wish more members were like that. But hey each to his own, right?
If you ask me which you didn't, I would say that break things down and understand the simplified state of everything, this helps you when you sketch or draw your initial stage: in a painting or speedy.
Don't look at those simplified shapes as abstract, cause then you really need to see everything as abstract which are not gonna help you, well that is if you are looking for illustrative knowledge. I think you are, aren't you?
There are more to it and I think I know one or two things about Abstract shapes. I probably sound like a hypocrite because most of you know I went abstract way to far, that's why it is important to understand the difference between a simplified shape and an abstract one.
Unless you gonna bend the rules as I have. |

Hey David, I like that landscape a lot. the dude coming out of the portal is cool too.
Fripp, I've been enjoying your experiments with design and texture. keep going!
The weather here in the bay was changing constantly today... that combined with the high winds made it really difficult to pull off. I'm just happy I didn't drop my palette or sketchbook in the dirt, though it might have improved these

thats awesome W@sker, looks like you got in a fight with mike tyson heh heh
octavian-thanks! im loving these gouache paintings-i think im gunna start my sketches in traditional too, its such a nice way to paint (though acrylic, i remember gouache being somewhat expensive?)
matthew-haha, i think the same of you, the old days were awesome-I feel like i would've learned something had I not been an idiot highschooler. I think its nice to hear a painter talk about what they were trying to do with the painting, cause then you can kindof see how they were thinking, which teaches alot more than just seeing the painting.
What would you say about abstract shapes though? I am looking for illustrative knowledge, but abstract thought can add something more-and we can always turn an abstract shape into a simplified 'something' if there is a need...
fripp-thankyou-i'm seeing an interesting evolution in your recent paintings!
David,tallken-very inspiring!
crappy painting to post- yeah i smudged it in ps. whatchu gonna do about it?!

Samsonsreaper: very light and pretty speedie (still waiting for your new brush set )
jOuey: love it, especially the "frog-like" piece.

Insane Lemur, lol thanks. Regarding abstract shapes. I am all for abstract thought and I think most illustrative people should go through a period of abstract thinking. Especially to get out of the nudging kind of painting. Hmm I think I am out of depth here though to give illustrative advice, think I know how I would approach something to give it detail though. But that would be another discussion.
So my answer would be yes and no. Use abstract shapes but keep in mind what they should be, a pillar, a tree, a stone and or perhaps whatever.
You know I can pm you if you want?
There are more to this.
Would be interesting to hear what Samsonreaper and jouey and these guys would think about the subject.
Fripp, that tallken pic is, Princess Mononoke. If you haven't seen it I can really recommend it. Big wolves and shit. It's an anime btw.
This gonna need a lot of attention from this stage to fix everything. Detail is only detail though
