My experiment - Two drawings of the same setup described below.

The upper drawing is pencil on paper and made by viewing the set up and the reference photo on a flat screen monitor. There was no tracing or other devices used while making the drawing. Completely eyeballed from the setup and the reference photo.

The lower is a digital Cintiq drawing. I traced a simple contour drawing of the major shapes, and then made the drawing while eyeballing the reference photo, comparing it to the drawing as I proceeded, but not using any tracing technique.

Yes very interesting...

Obviously you have a different scale though as the digital tool had a finer point or a larger canvas?

Essentially the same scale... but that is a bit hard, maybe even irrelevant after a certain resolution is being used digitally. From any resolution point at which a line is well defined... from that point on, print size does not make a great deal of difference...

The pencil is 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" and the digital is the same at 300 ppi.

What was the difference in workflow? And which one took longer time?
I am guessing the digital one took longer time because of more detail, would be interesting to see another one trying to get the same size of the point in both of them.
Cool experiment, keep up.

When I was done, I wished I had timed them... My sense is they both took roughly the same time. However, the pencil may have taken me longer than it would have if it had not been my first pencil work in many years... decades, actually.

Funny, I almost commented before that I haven't done a pencil sketch since the early 80's. I switched to Pilot Razor point felt tip pens and currently Uniball ball point pens with the smallest size I can get .5mm now. They had a .3mm but its discontinued.

I switched to pens because I wanted the black to be black.

Nice sketches. The last few I've really noticed that you have a very short stroke. Maybe you've been doing that all along and the recent details have shown it better. I like it.

Thanks... Smile

The initial strokes are often quite long, but tighten up as I add layers of strokes... that seems to be the way it is working out...

I'm now starting the initial sketches for my second large (4' x 6') oil painting in a similar style to "The Irreverent Rapture" which is the first one I finished over a year ago. I have a good idea what the painting will be about, but have just started to work out the composition. The Cintiq is an amazing help...

Here's the first sketch for one of the many characters who will populate the composition... I think I'll continue to add them to this thread as they get done.

Here's another prelim study for characters in the composition to be... an idea from an earlier painting done many years ago

Hey man, these look really interesting.

One thought with the guy and the chainsaw: Is he the one falling down? From the angle he looks upright, and I'm thinking, if he cut the tree then when he got the last part the massive weight of the tree would fall pulling that strip of wood with it. Basically if he's on the "base" of the tree the part he cut off should have the extra strip, and the base he's tied to should have the chunk missing.

Interesting point... I'll keep that in mind.

However, since the final composition will border on ridiculously surreal, I'm wondering how much it matters... Shocked Laughing

Looks really interesting for sure... again this probably doesn't matter that much in the whole context but the flag waving arm has a bit of a case of spaghetti elbow. The blade of the chainsaw is a little skew as well.

All things are important Smile

I'm not sure what you mean by "spaghetti elbow?"

The wings drawing is being changed. I wanted the feathers to be pointy, but it doesn't really look right... I'll post the revision when done.

------------

here's the redo:

More preliminary Cintiq sketches for a new oil painting composition. The totems will end up being about 36" in height on the 44" x 72" panel.

It's not obvious in the sketch - the stuff blowing out of the hose are rose petals... Color will make that clear in the final painting.

Going to do a test painting, so I've digitally worked out the color scheme for this character grouping

Here's another set of characters for my developing composition... I'm also going to paint this grouping in oil as a test painting

I'm almost finished with the full layout... next is working out the color and then starting the oil painting on a 44" x 72" panel... I'm going to get some of the new W&N acrylics that supposedly do not change color when drying. After experimenting with them, I may do the first under paintingwith them... Has anyone tried them out yet?

Pardon me for butting in but I think Eyewoo's version is correct - exaggerated example here (first relevant hit in google images): http://media.apnonline.com.au/img/news/2009/08/09/Coolum-dune-vandalism-3--Aug09.jpg500_t325.jpg

[dons science geek hat] Using the drawing as ref, the base of the top part pivots left. If the base (of the top part) was able to *slide* to the right, then the spiky part would be attached to the top, yeah. To force that much mass (the top part of a tree) to slide sideways - you'd need a helluva golf club. Smile

Still another edit: Oh, I see in the current version the tree is notched in the direction of its fall - nope, not gonna pull ref to show the spiky part *still* happens on the bottom - hehe.

You, know... after see that reference shot, I think I'm going bact to the original version with the spiky part on the fall side...

I'm also getting the color scheme together digitally before starting the oil painting on a 44" x 72" panel.
