I was looking for another solid orientalist book other than "Orientalists: Western Artists in Arabia, the Sahara, Persia"

Wondering if anyone has this Orientalist book? Any good compared to the other?

Why would I bother reading a question before answering it Cool

I've looked through the second book and didn't think it was all that great. Maybe the text is good (?), but the slide selection isn't even close to the Davies book. There was more breadth in the artists represented, if that's what you're after. If I'm remembering the right book, it was sort of a survey of oriental themes throughout art history. Not at all like the Davies book that focused on 19th century academic painters.

Gotcha, i was on the fence about it. probably will pass on it now.

That was the main thing, just looking for a larger range of artists, but i could probably just go digging at the ARC. Razz

I had the second one years ago. I ended up scanning in my favorite pieces (about 2 Cool

and then sold it when I needed the money (back during my starving years). No real regrets here, since I keep the art books I really love and would never sell them, and that book wasn't one of them.

$600.00 for Orientalists seems insane. But the content and printing quality is indeed the best you can get. I thought I knew most artists from this period instead there are so many incredible painters I haven't even heard from.

600 is about 4 x the price im willing to pay for ANY book I've seen SO far. You professional people can justify it by saying it's needed for work-inspiration, you lucky bastards. Smile

hah, I think there is just some sort of error in the prize..
If you look at the front flap, it clearly say's 70$

No, it's out of print. That's why the used books are at $577. I checked tons of other websites... almost everywhere where the price is still listed at $70 it says "currently out of stock," and it's at ~$600 on the UK and Canada amazon.com sites, as well at other major bookseller websites.

The only real question is whether or not the publisher will publish another edition soon and the book will go back down in price.

Here in sweden I found it for around 100 dollars. Just go to the local bookstores they'll likely to have a few if they're well sorted.

The bookstores here are about as well sorted as a 2 dollar hooker after the day the troops got home.

I usually have to order anything interesting from online bookstores.

Lol, everyone is selling the thing for 2000 bucks. How does this make any sense, does anyone actually buy books that expensive?

Hey all, I should've posted this ages ago, sorry I forgot.

I also found a reasonably priced copy online, which, like the others, was never actually delivered. I called the publishers and it's just a guy and his son running the office, and they said they have no plans to reprint The Orientalists, and they're doing a book on American painters next.

And yeah, i can't think of any reason someone would pay $2000 for a book, seems ridiculous for something published so recently.
