M@, you can try different video card drivers, maybe it will solve the problems. And did you disable all the advanced options in opengl settings? Also what windows do you have, vista64?
My cs4 doesn't work in xp32 and didn't work with older video card(7600gs) but now runs perfectly with ati 4870 on vista64. It's also good that now i can throw 6gigs of ram at photoshop. There's also a dockable color picker in the works (link).
There are serious compatibility issues with the program but if you get past them, it's pretty cool. The panning is annoying but I got used to it. The only thing that really really annoys me is that the new brush resize shortcut can't resize dual-brushes properly. |

I am so glad I read this thread - I am a sucker for upgrades - cs3 works just fine for me. _________________ Gord MacDonald: http://www.cg2020.com |

I've got mixed feelings about CS4. I think they did a nice job of streamlining the interface across all their apps. It's a big improvement for those of us that have to use Photoshop with Illustrator, Flash, or other programs. But, aside from canvas rotation, there aren't any real improvements for digital painting. It's easy to turn off flick panning, tabs, and other annoying features in preferences.
As for speed, it was decent on my work PC until I updated my NIVIDIA drivers and then it crapped out. I was able to improve it by turning off most of the GPU options and setting my NVIDIA controls to performance over quality.
On a happier note, I haven't noticed any difference in speed on my MacBook Pro at home and it's running just fine with GPU settings turned on. |

I was really looking forward to CS4 because of the GPU features but its not compatible with XP 64. One of the developers said this was due to bugs with that version of windows which MS has no intention of fixing. I frankly don't buy that, but anyway I'm not sure i fancy switching to Vista just yet. |

Hey, just small update. CS4 - two thumbs up.
I am now happy with CS4. I don't know if its the latest update or what, but I've been using it at school and have installed it at home. There are no more slowdowns.
Maybe the reason for sluggish brush performance was the unoptimized brush engine. Which for some reason is not sluggish anymore after update. I guess cs4 uses similar stroke management as painter and alias... its really good.
Also... canvas rotation works fine even on large documents. And aliased unlike last version of painter i tried.
This below was a test, done at 3500px wide.

I'm using the CS4 demo on my laptop now. I was reading through the thread and I was a bit curious as to why some people thought about the program the way they did, because it works perfectly fine for me with duel core 2.66ghz processor, 512MB video card, and 5GB DDR3 RAM. Then again, I haven't done any huge paintings, but I haven't had any sluggish brush strokes with the brushes I use either- which aren't the simplest of kinds. I guess I must be using an updated version of the demo.
Unfortunately, the demo runs out in 1 day, so I'll have to get CS4... another way...
By the way, if they add a Craig Mullins filter, I hope they add a Whit Brachna and Dylan Cole filter to give the painting a more traditional look or to make the colors look better. A Sparth filter would be pretty sweet too, who would need crazy brushes then? ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ DeviantART
