I have yet to watch the old BSG stuff but I love the new one. Vipers are fine even though i much prefer the slickness of the Cylon vehicles, not to mention that they look eviiiil!
Onto the piece here - the overall rendering is top-notch, the subtle play of light on the various surfaces is amazing. I especially enjoy the crisp values and colours on the structures and the truck.
What I think is the weakness of the image is that the vipers don't fit well in it. The way the perspective is set up on the ground leads my eyes toward the horizon, yet there's nothing of interest there. My eyes are then abruptly pulled toward the top due to the dominate silhouette of the plane.
Additionally, the Viper closest to the camera has some perspective oddities going on in relation to the ground - in reality you would need a vertically wide-angled, maybe fish-eyed lens to capture the plane that way. Its wings and the mounted guns also suffer from perspective issues; look closely and you'll see that the distance between each gun to the plane's body isn't the same.
I guess my biggest problem with it is that I am not sure what to take away from the image. Are the Vipers doing a fly-by? ( though unlikely since they are way too close to the ground) Are they about to land? what are those openings are the ground? The story here isn't complete for me. I think if you have a squadron of Vipers taking off in the distance towards the direction the guy is looking at, or to the far right, it would make a better scenario and compositionally, a better image.
I hope what I've said helps ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

hey synncial .. thanks for the detailed reply.. yeah you are right in all the points,
the vipers are 3D wires so the perspective should be right. the weapons ar exactly at the correct positions.. but i think i painted them in a way which just looks wrong, lighting wise.. hehe.. i gave me a time limit of two days for this pic and i stopped when i reached it.. hmm maybe i give it some extra work later this month.. wanna finish some other stuff for my portfolio first. |

That's really great raybender, I really like it.
After reading the other guy's comments, I took a copy of the image into Photoshop myself, flipped it, turned it upside-down, etc. I can't see any perspective issues at all and the composition seems to flow really nicely.
To me personally, the image actually reads a little better when flipped (Vipers on the left) as it gives more of a sense of the ships landing and the little dude becomes a nice focal point in the bottom-right third of the image.
As it is now though... still very, very cool. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ http://neechart.blogspot.com/ |

I deleted the posts, think silence somehow proves my point that most just see the forums as a way to tap eachother on the back. |

raybender, yeah, now i went back to look at the viper again, it's the way it's lit that made the perspective look wrong. Just need a bit more bounced light on the body there to create some distance from the wing. |

No I'm not gonna explain myself.
However I can say this, I read through your first post before you edited. Something along with my demands. There are some other things but maybe you can go and read through that "Lean Bean Mcqueen" thread.
I was wrong in the first place to give critique, not what I do anymore. |
