My new studio is finally finished (took about a year of planning, researching, designing, construction, moving, and decorating):

Entrance:

Open the door:

The nervous center:

From the other side:

Some artsy gear porn:

And just how does the new studio sound? It sounds fantastic. All the acoustic treatments paid off big timeeverything sounds detailed, accurate, dynamic, and natural. The biggest difference Ive noticed is in the low frequencies. In some of my favorite jazz vocal tracks (by Lisa Ekdahl), the double bass used to sound too prominent and boomy in just about any car stereo, home stereo, or even the same set of Klein + Hummel O 300Ds in a different room, but now they sound perfectly balanced and articulate. This is kind of sad because you then realize that a vast majority of the population will never hear music on a good system in a good environment, and they will listen to music that doesn't sound like how the original mastering engineer meant for it to sound their entire lives. Currently with two computers running the studio is at low-30s db in ambient noise, and when the computers are off its about mid to high 20s. If I put the computers in an ISO like I plan to, the studio should stay at about high 20s.

Damn, that's quite the project!! The studio looks awesome and probably sounds even better, it would be uber-cool to listen movie soundtracks there.
Also, nice Waterhouse painting at the entrance Smile

PS what lens did you use for the gear closeups? I like the shallow DOF it produces.

Merry christmas & happy New Year! (I'm kinda surprised 2009 is just around the corner and we still haven't had synthetic humans or killer robots from the future hehe)

Yeah, the Canon 1D MKII. For the wide angle shots I used Sigma 12-24, and for the artsy shots I used the 50 1.4 (which is my default lens for that pretentious artsy look Very Happy ).

I have various airsoft masks/goggles around the studio because I don't get to play now that I moved back to China, so I might as well put them out as a reminder of how much I loved playing airsoft. (But even when I moved back to the States from 2006~2008, I still didn't get to play because life was just too hectic.) I also have 4 airsoft rifles fully loaded and charged (all upgraded to 400fps) placed in various strategic spots in the home, so that if anyone tried to break in while we're home, I'll make sure he loses every single teeth in his mouth, both eyes, and his hands would be so swollen that he would not be able to hold anything for at least a week. (If China allowed real guns I'd use real steel). Nobody fucks with my sanctuary.

Those are some massive screens...30 inches? I love the sci-fi vibe of the whole room. What kind of lights are behind those reflectors hanging up top?

I want that Waterhouse painting, dammit Mad

The dual displays are Samsung SyncMaster 244T and Samsung SyncMaster 2493HM--both are 24". If I went to 30" they'd be too wide horizontally and block direct path from the monitors to my ears--which is a big nono for critical monitoring.

The colored LED lights are just el cheap stuff--the smallest and cheapest LED lights I could find here in Fuzhou, all linked up with MIDI cables and controlled by a DMX-192 control console. I have them set to different colors, and I have 8 sets of "scenes," with automated settings of staying on each scene for 15 seconds, and then takes 3 seconds to fade into the next scene. I really only need that much to keep me entertained--I don't even bother using the rest of the programmable stuff the DMX-192 is capable of. I don't do any crazy shit that will make my dizzy such as set it to be triggered by sound--it'll look too much like a dance club and distract way too much. I prefer slow changing colors--very soothing.

I think by "reflectors" you mean the acoustic treatments (broadband absorbers). They are glassfiber panels wrapped with burlap, and fixed in place with wooden strips for borders. The LED lights are not "inside" them, but shining onto them. I just put the LED lights wherever they'd stay put and not fall to the floor and break.

Great job on the room!

Have the neighbors complained about noise levels yet?
Or is it anything goes during the day and stop at a reasonable time.

I sometimes keep going past midnight and I haven't heard complaints yet (I fortified the ceiling with a second layer of sound isolation, but since it's not a room-in-a-room design, sound probably will still travel up by structural means). Downstairs is our own home, so no problem there. We also don't have side-way neighbors so that's also not a problem.

Thanks for the explanations there, Lunatique. i didn't know there was a lighting console involved, which sounds pretty cool in how you can play with the different settings.

And yeah, I had no idea those were called broadband absorbers. Razz I learn something new everyday.
