When I return I want to get my PS2 a companion - what do you recommend I get?
Anyone got some examples of outstanding games for either?

I heard people were quite disappointed by Halo ... fucking Bungee sellouts!

Rogue Squadron looks awesome from the screenshots I've seen ... Factor 5, the developers, were an old Amiga demo/cracker group ... like back in 1988 ... sigh ... and their sound guy, Chris Huelsbeck started on the C64 ... they've come a long way. Met him a couple of years ago at E3 ... very nice dude ... blabber ...

Yeah, yeah, I remember the good ole days... Huelsbeck made the background music for Turrican. Damn I loved that game.

SUPER MONKEY BALL!!!!!!

It's awesome. A jolly good reason to buy the Gamecube.

Haven't tried anything on X-box yet, except for Halo, just briefly, and that seemed quite awesome too.

But it ain't no Super Monkey Ball.

And, there's the fact that Nintendo is the only games company left still making consoles, since Sega left the field. That has to count for something. A specialist makes for a healthier market.

And since both consoles seem to have and get their share of exclusive sweetness, this is my excuse and I'll stick to it.

Oh, and the Gamecube just looks oh-so purdy. I'll buy anything that looks like an overgrown LEGO brick.

(Edit: And Turrican rocks!)

I say XBox because so many hacks are coming out for it, like they made it possible to play HALO over the net through your computer

But personally PC is all i need.

I would say Xbox just because of its expandability. MS will be launching the online network for Xbox, plus you can turn your Xbox into a rendering node if you really wanted to (hacking, hehe). And although the launch games weren't that great, there are good games on the way. I mean, it took PS2 quite a while for people to harness the power and speed of it; same goes for the Xbox. But you don't have Zelda or Luigi's Mansion for Xbox. It's pretty much whether you want great games in loads right now, or whether you want to make an investment into a system that will really remain strong over time because of hardware and expansion capabilities. I have an Xbox, and I haven't bought games in quite a while. But I'm looking forward to a lot of the stuff that was shown at E3.

Really it's preference. I would say both systems will be around for quite a while. But, many people said that about Dreamcast and Sega CD as well. Hehehe.

Gamecube.

There are so many awesome titles coming for Gamecube. Mario, Zelda, Starfox, X-men: Next Dimension.

I'm not into the Super Monkey Ball type games at all. Same goes for Pikimin or whatever. I hated Super Smash Bros. too. But trust me, you can't go wrong with Nintendo man.

Check out this video for X-men:

Gamecube may have more "kiddie games" but more often than not the gameplay is actually more fun and original...so if you can put up with that, then I'd say go for the gamecube...

If you simply can't tolerate that...PS2!

I wouldn't suggest buying an XBOX...at least now anyways...check out this article: http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/news/0,10870,2873141,00.html

I'd wait a while and get the newer XBOX, rather than fork out the money now to be dissapointed when micro$oft releases a better system later...

i've heard lots of issues about the x-box. seems to have a number of problems. problems with the disc drive not opening. something in the disc drive has sctrached up some peoples discs.

i read what happened to this one guy. his dvd drive had some issues and had to send it back to get repaired and all this stuff and in the end he spent over $1000 getting it all fixed and other issues it had. the customer support was horrible too aparently. he also went back to the store he bought it from and found out that 22% of all x-box's from that store have been returned. that's not really good.

personaly i'd go with the GameCube. it's not all kiddie games, but they do have some. there are lots of games for it that look good (though i havn't played any of the new consoles yet so i can't say if they really are good or not). some of those are. smash brothers, rouge squadern, resident evil (the first one. remade for the GC), eternal darkness. and some that arn't out yet, but look good are of course your standard nintendo games like Zelda, Mario, Metroid and Star fox.

gameplay is always nintendo's main priority. i can't say that about microsoft. i don't know much about the x-box games though i'm afraid. the only one i ever hear about is halo and personaly i don't think its worth spending $500 (cdn) on a game console just for one game... but maybe thats just me.

Personally, I'm waiting it out a bit longer, however much the price drops tempt me to spend my rent. I have played Rogue Squadron and thought it was pretty yummy. You could always rent out an 'Box and 'Cube from ya video shop when ya get back and suss it out yaself. Or find friends with either console. Try before ya buy @:-)

If all else fails, grab yaself a Dreamcast off eBay or similar. Cheap as chips in both games and console. Then buy a DC Keyboard as well as hang around on forums between games.

Game Cube it is, was and will be. Never even thought about getting an Xbox for a second, HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Just wanted to see what people think.

Luna: who gives a rat's ass about playing kiddie or "oh so manly and cool" games as long as they're entertaining and fun - and that's where Nintendo always rocked. I played with my N64 for almost five(!) years because the games just kept me coming back.

They're really great consoles to have friends over and play together. I used to frown upon Mario Cart since it looked so kiddie - but once I got into it, I loved it. Hardly ever happened with any other console game ...

As for the Xbox - I hope it dies and goes away - I've got a fully decked out PC anyway ...

I've played my share of Mario/Sonic/Zelda..e.tc, as I also grew up on them. They just don't intrigue me the same way as other games. I think other games just have more of that same excitment I feel when I see an awesome trailer for an upcoming film that I just HAVE to wait in line to see.

I also have a N64. Conker's Bad Fur Day was the main reason for purchasing that system. Played some Golden Eye and Perfect Dark on it too. They were nice for consoles at the time, but I was already spoiled by the PC's library of legendary FPS collection.

I love my Dreamcast though. Long live Sega!

Project Ego might convince me to get an Xbox.
Peter Molyneux making an rpg..that got me excited. And that is the first time I got excited about a game in two years or so.

It's all about who ends up developing for it. I've seen the list of games comming out for XBOX and they don't seem to be on the rise. The PS2? Hell yes! So many games to choose from, and a lot of RPG's (my personal favorite). The Gamecube? I like it for what it is, but it's more of a "play at your friend's apartment" type of system for me. Just my 2 cents.

The only reason N64 owners kept "coming back" to their games was because they paid $55-$75 a pop for them. Hell, at those prices I'd be playing them over and over even if I hated them.

BTW, Rogue Squadron sucks on the later levels. We're talking like 10fps suckage and you're expected to do precise little movements under bad time constraints. Bleh.

Halo rocks.

Loki, buy both. Aren't you making the big bucks painting Golem's ass? Everyone knows Sega makes the best games ever and they're spread across all the platforms now.

I'd just like to say something to those of you don't like Nintendos "Kiddie" games...

... GROW UP!!!!!!

(And stop playing with those interactive G.I.Joe: Action Force simulators... you just might choke on a loose part).

Pat: do you really think I'd be talking so fondly of the N64 because of the expensive catridges? That's ridiculous.
I think you push the Xbox because you paid a shitload of $$$ for it when it came out and have to justify your decision ...

Also $55-$75 is worth it if the game keeps you entertained for a long time, which the better Nintendo releases usually do ...

Halo could've been much better if Bungie wouldn't have been bought out by M$ and forced to release it early (and probably dumbing it down too).
Heck - look what happened with Mechwarrior - 3 was excellent and then they got bought by M$ and 4 was more or less a pile o' poop.

I'll never support a company that wants to push inferior products just because of their dominating stance in the market.

Game Cube here I come! Wheeeeeeee!

The only way I'm aware of that will allow you to do that is if you buy a tunder module. But, I'm not really up on all the recent techie buzz, so there might be other options.

Viewsonic makes a VERY good tuner module that is getting rave reviews. In fact, here is one of them:

Click for review.

I got my Gamecube with NBA Street, Eternal Darkness, and Tony Hawk 3. I'm really waiting on Mario, Zelda, and the new Starfox. Metroid looks pretty slick too.

NBA Street is actually my favourite game of them all. It is incredibly fun. I rented MX Superfly and Wrestlemania X8. Both are good, but I wouldn't buy them I don't think. MX Superfly seems moderately addictive, though.
