overpaint to post

Lemur, this isn't much good of an overpaint below but I just wanted to explain myself a little. Wipe out is not the same as making big changes, big changes is when you are for example changing the pose of a character or keep changing the volume of the background. The volume would be the flow of the whole.
There is a certain flow in everything to consider, hard to explain and I am too much abstract to explain it, ok I try.
In a landscape you have two values against eachother bright and dark, usually the sky is bright and the ground is dark. simplifed this means that big changes would be that you kept adding or deleting from that ground... u understand? the background is still there, the sky....
keep adding and then you try to delete.
Try this: For the next speedie you do keep the whole thing abstract for the first ten minutes, try to get a good overall tone. One dark and one being the brightest point. After ten minutes you try to find something in it all.
Try it out, could be interesting and post here.
Could be interesting for the other of us aswell.

Ah yes reading that you find figure drawing important you should teach yourself some important points in anatomy, a grasp of the some of the characteristic pressure points helps much, I am sure you are aware of the deltoid? There are maybe 10 of them to get around and make it look ok without getting too much involved. I don't find figure drawing important though, think anatomy studies alone should be the most important if you wanna do illustrative, however I find all that boring nowadays.
I am too abstract to give advice so you shouldn't listen to me.
Have a nice weekend

Happy holidays everyone.
This was a sketch for a marketing joke at work.
A co-worker named it :Veglockoraptor. There is probably nothing more dangerous than a gun toting zombie-Dinosaur

The most inspiring thread!

Done in one afternoon, not sure how speedy it should be, so anyway...

Thanks guys!

TJ- I understand it better now, sometimes it just takes a big change to salvage, which leads in to what Matthew has been talking about...

Matthew- thanks a TON for that overpaint! You've given me a new idea on working broadly as a flow and adding/subtracting. I think I understand but would appreciate to hear any more thoughts. Painted this painting and had alot more fun with it, kept my mind open and helped me classify values with those decided light/dark places. I'm gonna get on some anatomy studies, I can see how that helps with making the blobs recognizable.

Also been carrying my sketch pad around and drawing as more of a freetime activity keeps me in the mind to paint. Used to just draw for an hour or so but now its nonstop.

That one's great, Lemur! It could probably use a little contrast between the character and the background but still very cool. Very Happy

I was just messing around with colors and shapes with this one;

Lakka, Paoo: thanks Surprised

My composition and values suffer a lot when I try to deal with all the elements of painting at once, so I think I'll be starting my stuff in greyscale for now :/

Some thumbs for composition practice:
