thanks guys
Vyle- I found a pair of paper 3d glasses (prolly came from a cereal box waaay back in the day) and looked at your pic again, fun stuff, not to mention awesome painting!
matthew, i mean umbus...oops I meant sometimes!- you have a sharp eye! but in reality I left it on and went to eat! You can't prove I would commit such a heinous crime as page lurking!
I need to get some more life studies in, fallout 3 threatens my painting time, and this one doesn't make much sense as far as the drawing goes, should make a habit of drawing through-

Lemur, wasn't my intention to single you out but rather I find it kind of interesting, was it that makes us interested in posting? a price at the end of the tunnel? I used to be like this aswell waiting for a new page and then post...
/oops now u know my secret, guess I have to change my nick again soon lol.
I was serious though regarding the software mailfunctioning and it being a part of the process... it makes you have to restart and those feelings makes you think differently. Why not use it?
Someone said (can't remember where?) in the forum that they didn't dare to make big changes in the pieces when they progressed a bit into the process, if you feel like this you really should make big changes because big changes in the process also forces you to think differently.
A teacher once told me that you shouldn't follow the drawing too much, the color doesn't have to be placed within your drawing...
This probably don't apply well with you guys seeing that the most of you are into the illustrative side of digital art.
And probably the most of you are not gonna read this either so I might end here.

nice ead
matthew- I was just kidding with you, I think posting has to do with community, but I really don't understand why my monkey brain has it in him to post
I appreciate your thoughts on process, I dont think my problem is with making big changes to a piece, I regularly wipe paintings, what boggles me is setting up that beginning stage of structure and the big value relations in a way that makes sense and opens up for refinement. Its almost like making a simple picture to "trace" all the refinement on,. Every time I fuck up its because I skip ahead and try to find a picture without figuring out the basic info of what I'm going for, and I think this is why life drawing is so important as it is the biggest reminder of them all that a picture must be "constructed". I think the most amazing part of painting in a picture isn't the slopping part, but when you actually see the image in your head and treat it like you are painting from it. If I don't set up the first parts this never works though... I really should remember this, but there is so much to think about that even the most important inspirations are overlooked in haste... I try my best to balance the illustrative and the visual exploration, I really like pictures that tell stories, and some abstract pieces do that very well. You've given me alot to think about, my brain is buzzing.
A test piece, I attacked the canvas trying to find dominances and such, but I tried to do two things at once and it all went to sheeeeeit!

Lemur> maybe you're being too hasty with abandoning these, its pretty tough to be able to nail a composition and value set up in a few sweeping marks, sometimes you just have to battle your way though an image and keep changing things to find something of interest. I tend to think the best painters are the ones who can dig themselves out of the deepest shit.

3hrs... I think I was channeling Andree's mech speedpaint on Youtube with this one - I've watched it so many times and get a little more info with each viewing.

is it helpful to use big brushes down to small in that order? I feel I could benefit from being more disciplined with that.

That's usually the best way. Start big and loose and gradually work your way down to smaller brushes for cleanup and refining. Make sure to keep working on the entire piece as a whole and don't get caught refining one area too much without moving around to other parts of the painting.
Your work is great and I see it improving every time I stop by but as EAD mentioned, you may be leaving your work a little too quickly. There is always a chance to keep going and save any painting from the trash if you're persistent enough.
