Hey all, just wondering if anyone listens to any Chinese music (I seemed to remember there were some Chinese people in this forum, so..). I just discovered Eyes on Me, the Chinese version.
Thanks. |

You mean, like, Chinese-ized Western music (Asian pop)? Or Westernized Chinese music, like Tan Dun's Silk Road/CTHD stuff?
The latter is the SHIT. Yo Yo Ma's a brilliant musician, turning the cello into an Eastern instrument. |

I was thinking more of Chinese music with Chinese lyrics (I'm really looking for cantonese, since that's where my childhood was), so I guess that'd be the latter. But I'm afraid I don't know the examples you listed, but I'll check them out anyway.
Thanks
BTW, I've heard of some work by Yo Yo Ma. I'd have to say I love him too. |

anita mui (sp?) has a song called -years flow as water
i heard it when i was little , and it's just wonderful.
and there's many songs by teresa teng that just makes my heart stop a beat. fantastic stuff, i think in chinese her name is dung li grun, or something like that.
even though i don't understand what they're singing about, those songs really do sound good, if you're into old school cantonese music.
-btw, my cantonese isn't too great. but i know good music. |

I'm the guy you want.
I used to write songs for big time singers in Taiwan(SOS, Wu Chi-Long..etc).
Here are some suggestions. Mind you, I haven't been follwing the Chinese music scene since I stopped writing music for Chinese singers back in 95:
If you like wong Faye's "Eyes on me," you would probably like all her other albums. "Sky" is one of her best albums. So is "Ten Thousand Why's."
I'm a fan of the musician type over the pretty face/nice voice type. So, here are some creative minds:
Dou Wei- He's the ex-drummer of one of the biggest rock groups in China, Black Panther. His solo albums are like a mixture of classic pentatonic scale music with heavy influences from the Cocteau Twins. Dou Wei is Wong Faye's ex, and when they worked on her "Impatience" album, they actually had Cocteau Twins write two songs for the album.
Beyond- An ex-heavy metal band turned commercial rock. Pretty good stuff.
Anodize- A grunge rock band.
Hwong Yueen-Ling- Excellent jazz musician and song writer. Her stuff is like jazz influenced pop.
Assassin- hard rock/heavy metal. I used to hang out with these guys. They kick ass.
Hwong Da-Wei- Great musician and song writer. Nice singing voice too. Style is a combo of rock, funk, pop..etc.
er.... to tell you the truth, I really don't listen to much Chinese music at all anymore. Most of it just isn't very innovative. |

Korea's got some of the best hip-hop on the planet right now--along with France.
Hip-hop in Korea has become a national style now. It's weird how that happens. |

Whoa, thanks for all the recommendations! I just searched for Cantonese and found tons of new songs (including the popular ones back in '95 when I was still in China). I think my new favorite singer is Coco Lee.
A main reason I'm trying to get more of this sort of music is because I really need to polish my Cantonese and my Manderin(sp?), since I left China when I was still in second grade and I can barely carry out a simple conversation with my relatives in that dialect.
BTW, I find that I don't even understand my native language anymore..
But thanks again to everybody who replied! |
