thsAcid: Since I've been working in the industry (a year now) I've been asked to use photos in creative ways, not only for texturing, but for illustration and concepts as well. U could either apply a small texture info or you could use reference that you own to dictate your composition and or lighting. I've never "painted over a photo" but have used our own shot reference photos for nailing certain features. so in the end, it is best to use your own photos, be honest about it, and know that it is a practice in the industry... anything that gets the job done fast.
