rinthe: i cant agree with jgwong. using color profiles is very important when showing your work on the internet. i think the reason why your colors are changed while saving it, is because your image is automatically saved in SRGB color Profile (because this is something like the color profile most monitors are capable to show) if a color managment aware browser gets an image which has no color profile attached to it, the browser assumes it to be srgb. so if you really wanna make sure that you colors look on other peoples screens like you painted them, the easiest way would be to set your new documents to SRGB Color space, work in SRGB and save in SRGB... this way they are also saved like they are.. and look better even on browsers which are not color managed (e.g. Firefox) but then you really need to use the CONVERT to Profile function and convert it to SRGB before sending it to the Web to make sure the colors stay like they are intended to be. When using the Save for Web function Pshop saves the image automatically in SRGB which leads to color and brightness shifts how you describe them.
of course the whole color profile thing doesnt make much sense if your monitor isnt calibrated at all. you can find tutorials on calibrating your monitor by hand on the net, or even better if you can gain access to calibration device (Eye1 Display) you can calibrate your montir exactly (this will make sure that your image looks the same on others peoples monitors, but only if they calibrated them too )
this site describes it a bit better and also explains jgwons problems : http://www.gballard.net/psd/go_live_page_profile/embeddedJPEGprofiles.html
big Sorry for the long post heres the my bad colors SRGB profiled post:

Raybender: Indeed, sRGB is the profile to go with if you want to use profiles for any reason whatsoever. I'd like to share another point of view, from someone who worked with and designed color conversion hardware: http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/color-management/is-for-wimps.htm
And I'll stop here. Let's find a solution that works and keep painting!
Didn't want to post empty-handed, so here's an old paint.
