This is my sisters child Oliver, he is 9 days old on the reference photo. No tracing but used a photo as reference.
This is a present for him and my sister.
Painted in Adobe Photoshop CS3, with a Wacom Intuos A4 drawing board. About 30+ hours.
Step by step and reference photo can be found here:

I don't like the dodge effects. But overall it's very nicely done _________________ *

What a cutie, great work overall. I can see the point about the dodge effects as the realism of the baby is thrown off a bit by the clothing and teddy bear suit because of those dodge effects.. Now if you were doing that on purpose to contrast two separate styles the kudo's as it turned out great, if not then it is conflicting a bit in my eyes |

it looks like a 3d model, good job if you're trying to do that. but other wise, i think it has no life and rather boring to look at. |

Whoah!
I usually think comments should be more critical but I this time I think they should be a bit more lenient.
Personally I think it's great. It's smooth but doesn't look overglossy (maybe because it's black and white), and it seems very personal. It's the kind of portrait I would want someone to do of my baby (the baby in the bear crib is great)... um, if I had a baby.
But I really like it... I actually think the dodge stuff keeps the baby's head more smooth, I can't speak to the other dodge effects too much... maybe tone them down if you reexamine them and don't like them. |
