Oh man sijun is still rockin, I LOVE leavin for a while and comin back to a whole bunch of kickass stuff

Nag - lovely
Lemur - the green one is great
Hideyoshi - nice
Reaper - the softness is palpable, i LOVE it
Soulburn - interesting spaceship design
Toast - ice is NICE, very cool stuff I love the landscapes!
Mikko - real cool textures
Daryl, impressive as usual!
Ditlev - nice. I gotta check out those DVD's one day...
lakka- great lighting and surface, but I'd crop it down a little unless you were going for a vignette feel.
PaooooooooooooooooooOOooOooOOOooh
Fernstrom - awesome and funky!

Tonight's villain:

Matty you're definitely coming a long way. I definitely think you should be doing more 3/4 view portraits, less head on stuff. Again I gotta say that you really should be using ref pictures with really strong light from the sides or top, instead of from the same direction the camera is pointing.

For instance this picture's lighting, is a bit better at describing the face's terrain:

Than this one, which (if you sqint n blur your eyes) is pretty darn flat:

(images from google image search)

Additionally, I saved some progress shots of the last one so you could get an idea about how I work. Notice how i start by immediately definiing the light and darks, focusing on the shapes the light makes with shadows and highlights. Once I get the shape of the head and lights right as well as the general proportions, THEN I move onto details and overall. Also notice that the color I choose for the background to begin with, to some degree, is the midtone/midhue which can be worked atop of.

Also i should mention that, especially with faces, there are always hotspots. The human face is normally a little bit greasy, and is thus reflective, and unless the light is very ambient and not like a spot (think overcast day vs. lamp without shade) there would be 'hot spots' like near the hairline on this last portrait of mine, or at the end of the nose.

Also you might have noticed that halfway through painting the base shapes of the portrait, I flipped the head. I'm not sure if you do this yet, but if you don't you really should. When i work outside of the computer it rather cumbersome because I have to end up looking in a large mirror, but the 'flip canvas horizontal' in photoshop is a timesaver and incredibly helpful. If you're workin from ref, its probably also a good idea to flip the reference image.

As I said, you're makin leaps and bounds, keep it up!

thanks everyone for the kind words.

Justin: Thanks man, it means a lot coming from someone of your calibre, Ive been following your sketchbook for ages now!

Zombat: Thanks again for everything youve helped me on, I feel like Im making real progress now. Im now taking more time, which is better because before I was rushing much too often.

You are right about the imagers, I use too many dull refs which dont make the face jump out (if you get me) I will choose some with more 'terrain' as you put it.
Very interesting to see your progress shots too and finally about the flipping the image, I started doing that on the last portrait, it really helps as you say.

aron> Very cool.~!
farvus> Simple but nice. Smile
toast> Really nice man.
med> Love the way u render metal. Very nice.
fripp> Interesting texture usage on the suit.

And one last piece for today. A cheap imitation of craig mullin's stuff. Still a long way to go. T_T Sad that craig don't post anymore. I use to hang out this site just to check out what he got to teach and post.
