I really don't like the character designs. I'm very picky about the way people stylize, and I think there are some stylizations that are inherently limited to the range of attractiveness you can depict. For example, when a style is based on odd looking proportions/features/angular forms, it's hard to have characters that are supposed to be beautiful actually look beautiful, because the base stylization parameters are already distorting the proportions/shapes in an unappealing manner. We all know that beautiful people can only look beautiful if you allow their features to form in shapes/proportions that have their own rules that shouldn't be bent too far.
My personal stance is that you can design a particular character to be angular and odd-looking, but you should not make everyone look that way. If you do, how are you to depict a character that is supposed to have very soft features and rounded facial contours? It's like all of sudden you've got a circle in world of squares and triangles.
My favorite character design styles are the ones where there are no inherent limitations built in--you can depict a wide range of characters without them all taking on some forced general qualities that they have to share. |

Great gravy - you guys! I wasn't asking for critical analysis! I just expect to be entertained. My stokeness comes from the fact that it's new storytelling with a new look - sort of, and that is something I welcome (yes, I have had enough of some of the live action Star Wars)
Rob - simmer down now! _________________ - Tom Carter

Hehe, sorry. Occupational habit.
I've had to deal with a lot of stylization issues with the external arthouses I've been art directing lately. IMO every studio must have at least one artist who is capable of drawing characters in an attractive manner that's suitable for IP's with mass appeal, but apparently, most studios don't have such a person. The character designs I get back usually look like a bunch of retard freaks, with stylization choices that only emphasize how freakish a human being can look, instead of how cute/charming/appealing they can be. It's as if no one told these studios that they are supposed to be working on charming casual games for the female audience. Grrr. |

I'm going to have to agree about the look of the characters.
When I first heard about this, the word was that it was going to be "a photorealistic CG series". This made me think that ILM was going to exploit their digital stuntman technology to do their characters. I was imagining something along the lines of "Beowulf", which may have been optimistic.
I think the stylization has merit, but after the phenomenal design of the "Clone Wars" miniseries, this just doesn't have as much pop. I'm still really anxious to see this (particularly in the theaters), but I can't help think of what could have been. I mean, they've apparently been working on this for two and a half years now.
Time will tell. |

Well I am not sure I entirely agree with you, Jimmy; my approach would be to wait till it's released, and then formulate a response after the series has sunk in. Admittingly I took a similar approach to the new Battlestar Galactica; I watched a couple of episodes and didn't like it at all, but after a while and under the advice of friends (geeky, scifi folks ), I gave it another chance and found it to be entertaining if not intense at times.

I strongly agree - I thought it was going to be like Beowulf as well.
As for Clone Wars, I suppose we'll have to wait and see. _________________ - Tom Carter

I hear you about waiting to formulate a response, I generally do- hence my "time will tell" statement.
I also pay attention to my first-level response about this kind of stuff, too. If my initial reaction is negative it will effect my overall opinion as well.
If the story and writing are good it will definitely push me into the "fan" category, which is what has made me such a BSG fanatic. |

Personally I don't think the characters look all that bad and honestly I'd take that over horrible dialogue anytime. Assuming there will not be any of that of course. Also nothing they make in stylized 3d could probably be as puppetlike as Hayden Christensen in the movies.
Not getting excited over anything Starwars anymore either, but if they made all the movie stuff like this instead of what they did, I still might. |

you know if this was live action (and lets face it, the new star wars films were probably more cg than real life any way) with just a different guy playing anakin, i would be so excited right now. _________________ -Chase |

I've seen the triler in the cinema yesterday. Well, the characters look okay, however it's not a special new style. It looks even more like a computer game to me. I would like to see a different approach on the Star Wars saga. Something that reinvents the Star Wars feeling. Maybe another director should lead this,...I would like to know what Stanley Kubrick's version of Star Wars would look like ;D |
