This was an in class assignment, had to model low poly. I used 3dsmax 8 with mental ray. Was a fun project, learned a lot about lighting. Next I want to tackle projection normals.....that will be a pain.

Looks nice spoons, I'm getting into 3d a bit myself, though I've got no idea about texturing and my lighting knowledge is basically that I know how to make one :p. |

Thanks, 3d is just like learning another O/S, just gotta know where the buttons are and what does what. You already have the artistic eye with painting so your 3d stuff should come out looking real nice once you get the hang of it.
another pic

My impression of those kinds of churches is that the lighting tends to be a bit starker, less soft ambient fill, darker, deeper shadows etc. |

Hey Affected thanks for the feedback.
Yea I turned in the project and got ripped apart from my teacher, hell I am the only one in the class who even passed. The textures suck real bad so I will be redoing as much as possible within this week. I was shown how to actually texture properly so hopefully it will look much better. I will add in different lighting and hopefully nail your crit on the head.
Thanks again. _________________ Truth is the essence of life, if that truth flows freely from you then why do so many choose to ignore it? --me |

please forgive me this quick overpaint, I am on a break from creative but I like churches so something had to be done.
I used to use 3ds max way back, sometimes still experiment with the 5th version. Did you use 1 omni for the setting?
If you want atmosphere I suggest add some more lights on the floor and all around the architecture, if you set them low u can have several of them. Volume fog adds to it aswell. Cast shadows adds to the composition, in my thinking it does anyway, try raytracing some of them.
oh well
gotta go

Good thoughts there matt, as I've said, I don't have much 3d knowledge, but a soft wide angle spot light or two coming off the floor at the generally appropriate angle to mimic warm bounce is what those jet black downward facing surfaces need to bring the form out. Get em to cast some soft shadows too to get the occlusion going. The sunbeams are a good thought, and maybe use some static cards generated in PS or randomized geometry off cam to give the impression of an outside environment like trees or scaffolding...
Also, I don't know if you can do this given that it's for school, but If I were you, I'd grab the random human male model off zbrush's site http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/, and mock up a quick robe (robes are real easy) around him and place about 3 (with one lead and two subordinated through either size or some decorative element) randomized variants in the back ground. It wouldn't take much geometry at all to get some fairly convincing monks lurking in the periphery of the shot.
Heh, Given time constraints though, matt's ideas are good. |

You guys are amazing, thank you for taking the time to point me in the right direction.
Matthew: I see what your saying, your overpainting really showed the potential of the piece. Your touches are real nice.
FallDamage: As always your input is much appreciated. If time allows I will model and add in some monks. Your completely right, not only will that help to set scale better but the mood as well.
Thanks again. _________________ Truth is the essence of life, if that truth flows freely from you then why do so many choose to ignore it? --me |

hey gotnospoons
I would still suggest some more lightsources but I bet you are doing a projection practise so my tips are not helpful.
did some research looking up on churches and a lot of them have indoors spotlights, lights in the ceiling which of course unless you are looking for the medieval touch, hmm.
Anyway last one, feels a little bit like wolfenstein, I liked this composition u did here:
btw, yeez this forum is like a dead ghost.
keep it up spoons

Hey Matthew thank a bunch for the feedback!
Sorry it took so long to respond, school is kicking my butt =D.
Thanks for the kind suggestions, your touches were truly nice. I am going to be working on a new project of an outdoor alley scene, something you would see in Tokyo. I will try my best to own the lights in that scene.
Also I will post WIPS up in the WIP forum.
Thanks again. _________________ Truth is the essence of life, if that truth flows freely from you then why do so many choose to ignore it? --me |
