You should get better at drawing than painting. Once you can draw a convincing face, then move into painting.

@everyone: awesome work guys!!!! I scored a concept artist job in the game industry!!! I'm now official. YAY ME. just shows that all the hard work will pay off really, really well in the end.

mattyuk, nice to see you hard at work. your values and colors seem very good. Have you tried thinking about the shapes of the object your painting and how they relate to one another? for instance... there are both positive and negative shapes. you can judge the distance between say... the nose and the mouth by looking at the shape that occurs on her upper lip area. So to check the correct placement of features on the face, you might try identifying major land marks and then judging the distance between them etc.

here is an example of how I would begin to set up the face... the red shapes with "N" in them I have identified as negative shapes to use while judging the shape of her head. if that makes sense. you should get used to finding these shapes in anything you paint from life so you can accurately depict what your painting. Life drawing will help you develop this a lot faster. anyway, keep up the good work dawg.

Mattyuk, you have a good sense of values and colors, what you need for now is skill of constructing the form imo.

Octavian, what an original approach. I personally find it kind of complex... for me it's more of a low-poly modeling with paint. Your sketch is great btw
I tried to paint this portrait too out of curiosity and it turned out extremely hard to capture the likeness. The impression on Cate's face is always so subtle and uncommon.
Got stubborn and spent an hour on it

And this is my mouse :)

...and coffee maker. Great example of unclever execution

Great works everybody!

ps. Octavian, congrats on a job.
