I just finished Portal, and OMIGOD, it is absolutely the cutest, funniest, creepiest, and most challenging game I've played in a very, very long time. This game just once again proved that the writers at Valve are fucking brilliant. They turned what's essentially a glorified puzzle game into a

psychological terror/comedy.
------------------SPOILER ENDS-----------
I won't give anymore away--you just have to play it till the very end (the credits) to know what I mean. Even the credits had me laughing and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. BRAVO! *clap clap clap* *takes hat off*
I will be playing the credits song over and over and over now. Cutest thing ever! |

Haven't played it yet, but KUDOS to everyone at Valve for Portal and TF2 - great work! _________________ - Tom Carter

I'm with you on this one. I just got the Orange Box for my 360 and Portal is freaking brilliant. I was an hour late to work the other day, just because I got so wrapped up in beating it. _________________ QED, sort of. |

BTW, anyone else thinking you're playing as Alyx's mom in Portal? I think so. |

No spoilers--there's nothing hinting at her being Alyx's mom at all--it's just my own wild guess. Alyx always looked part Asian and part African to me, so that's why I think so. Also, the woman you play in Portal has the same leg brace on as Eli Vance. |

-------------Spoiler, kind of (but not really)-------------
Actually, I just played through a part in EP2 where there was a photo of Eli, his wife, and little Alyx, and well, let's just say once you see that photo and have also played the first few minutes of Portal (enough to see yourself in the game), there will be no question who you're playing as. It's the same Asian woman, except in the photo her hair was down, and in Portal, her hair is tied up.

I just finished Portal.
Absolutely brilliant. best game Ive played in a long long time.
The credits left me smiling from ear to ear. I am so impressed.
just wow.
edit: most satisfying game Ive played in a long time. Portal was worth the price of admission itself. the rest of the games are gravy. |

I totally agree, and it was such a surprise. I had thought of Portal as a little extra bonus that came with the Orange Box, and the other games were the "real meat" you're paying for. Now after playing through most of EP2 and a few hours of TF2, I have to say it's actually the other way around for me. I never expected this, and being surprised in a good way is one of life's greatest pleasures. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

last night after I finished portal I loaded up HL2 Ep 1 (because I haven't even played that yet) and when I was done playing, I quit out and the steam news popup.. well.. popped up. It was a pure orange page with only 1 line of text on it that said
"whew. now were going to eat some cake"
It just topped the whole experience for me. it was the final smile for a complete experience. |

SPOILER
----*
Definitely a big surprise - and I thing that what made it so special - nowadays usually we pretty much know everything about a game before it comes out - but here they made it look like a small experiment they added to the big box - and I really wasn't expecting THIS. The part when you have to quickly think about how to escape death from fire and actually start escaping the facility and, you start to understand what the game really is about - that was easily one of the best gaming moments I had. _________________ http://mv.cgcommunity.com/ |

Absolutely, for me as well.
It was as if an entire wall of a set piece falls down and the boom mic drops into view, and you realized there's a whole other layer of reality outside of the one you're in, and to what extent you're about to be freed from a totally fake world. It was easily one of the most brilliant and thrilling moments I've had in gaming. Then seeing the projector screen naming Black Mesa as a competitor---wow.
-------------Spoiler for EP2 if you haven't played it----------
I'm still in the middle of EP2, and in Eli's lab in the White Forest, they actually talk about Aperture Science and the lost technology they developed, which was being stored on the ship Borealis, which has now been found by Dr. Mossman. This leads me to believe that in EP3, we will see the portal gun make an appearance--like a companion piece to the gravity gun. Think of what you can do with that combo. Holy shit.
----------End Spoiler-------------------

thanks guys. yeah, FPS is definitely best enjoyed on a PC. HL2 ran fine for me, though i'd prefer to run the game at a higher resolution on my widescreen monitor (which the xbox360 can) with higher graphical level...decisions, decisions, decisions... |

Hahaha.. that made me laugh.
I dont mind some fps with controller, like halo, but overall I prefer the mouse and keyboard. The whole reason I like my xbox is that its easy, I just put in the game disc and play. no waiting to install, no problems with drivers or directx being out of date.. just play. And with two kids thats important to me.
but as I said there are just some games that are meant to be played on a pc.. Half Life is one of them. So is Battlefield 2. |
