I am critical to todays movies but every once in a while u get to see some good ones. Can u recommend any new movies?
23 - very nice movie, jim carrey
Next - Nicolas cage seeing into the future worked for me aswell, not sure about the end thou
Whisper - not as good but cool evil kid though
Mr Brooks - I like Kostner but this movie did not like Kostner haha
Spiderman 3 was the worst crap ever
Transformers was not that good either, I am the old comic fan of the transformers so of course I am gonna like the comic more.
Death proof (Grindhouse?) Tarantino, this one was crap and snif Kurt Russel used to be good. funny end though when he says "-I am sorry I did not mean it" haha
ok keep the new titles coming and let me know which movies you like and dislike.
gonna see that wild hogs I think, maybe I can put in here what I think about it. |

Regarding a movie like Transformers, I think the robot part before we are introduced to them as the transformers is better. So what I want to say with that? I think a robot movie without the transformers could and would be better. what u think? |

28 Weeks Later was one of the best movies of 2007. I was waiting for this ever since I watched 28 Days Later for the first time (it's on TV right now, hehe). The problems with sequels of course is that they try to put something on top of the old story to make it "innovative". With 28, they didn't add much, and that kind of subtlety made it a really good movie. AAAND, the shaky-cam ending with the Eiffel tower was exactly what I wanted to see. Already looking forward to 28 Months Later!
Sunshine. Again, Danny Boyle. I guess everyone loved the visuals, it's the first movie that I think was worth watching in HD for the slowly moving solar scenes. The design was neat too. But what struck me most was the great actors and their performances. Sure, the last third was crap, but even that part was kinda well done. No.1 on my DVD wishlist. _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

Wow Matthew, I couldnt disagree more with you, I found 23 to be horrendous and Death Proof to be brilliant. |

that's ok. To me though Tarantino keeps doing the same shit over and over, if you look at death proof you have this supposed to be cool conversation between the girls in the beginning. the talk where she has to offer a lapdance to anyone who repeats well whatever it was, cant remember.
That felt like a copy to that scene in pulp fiction where they are debating about the mcdonalds and burgers in royal cheese.
oh well |

Death Proof was extremely boring imho and made no sense at all. After seeing it I wasn't even sure how much of Pulp Fiction was influenced by Tarantino. His stuff is way overrated imho. No clue why everybody loves him so much. Tarantino style? Nah. He's a fan of Korusawa, Leone, et cetera. Maybe that's what people like? |

It's actually the continuation of the conversation at the beginning from Reservoir Dogs, where the guys talk about giving tips and Madonna's "Like A Virgin".
I'm agreeing with you tho, I can't stand Tarantino's movies anymore, not even the old ones. Death Proof was nothing but repetition and pointers to his own movies. I enjoyed watching it for the sake of it, but the movie itself left me relatively untouched. There are way more directors out there making movies that are really worth watching.
Hm, does this poster remind you too of Max Payne? Anyone seen it? It looks fun, Kevin Bacon is kinda interesting. _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

agreed Kevin Bacon is interesting but he's acting is at sometimes shaky, "Stir Of Echoes" is a masterpiece and for some weird reason they changed the title here in sweden to a new english title? hmm, "The Secret Sense" not sure why they do that. Confusing if you talk about movies in english.
Fracture- did you guys see this one? with anthony hopkins, also feels like a copy of other movies, copy of his acting especially from the movie silence of the lambs and the sequels. He kills hiw wife and when incarsarated the prosecutor is chasing evidence like cat and mouse chase to get in hold of the gun, hmm. Must be a trillion movies like that? and the worst part is that they had some scenes when anthony hopkins character is walking around being filmed by a surveillance camera, felt very much like those silence of the lambs sequels.
Haven't heard of the "venus" gonna go look it up at imdb.
Sunshine, yea it was bad in the end but it also felt like they did make the movie too fast not looking into details, not sure I liked that sunscreen window where they were letting light come through, felt impossible in some ways? the suits were very cool
28 weeks later, haven't seen it, gonna look it up. 28 days was that zombie movie right?
btw I saw "Zodiac" yesterday, it was ok but way too long. That Gyllenthal guy is sometimes also shaky in his acting. Donnie Darko, "wake up donny" haha gotta love that.

Zodiac was extremely long yeah. And so depressing cause actually nothing happened at the end. I am no happy end guy, however this was sooo open. It was the only time in a movie EVER I asked myself, "how long will this thing go on,..."
Beeing an modern film noir at day I kinda liked it anyway,... |

i thought zodiac was one of the best movies I've seen in years. The director has a serious case of OCD; seriously, there wasn't a hair out of place in that movie, not a wasted line of dialogue. Quite an accomplishment for something that was, yes, so insanely long. _________________ QED, sort of. |

I was heading for newer ones but go ahead if you wanna talk about older ones too.
zodiac, was based on a true story too
1408, anyone seen it? I saw it a couple of hours ago and it was ok but that is the only thing I can give it, talk about copy of shining, the others and oh well I could go on and on. One scene was really creepy, he was crawling around in the ventilation shaft and this weird looking character started to speak to him and chasing him, creepish, yummy hehe.
28 weeks later, saw it, intense intro. Very good half of the movie, started to get boring towards the end, not sure why really. You liked it towards the end of the movie Jabo?
I think the movie industry needs something new, movies are getting way to easy and predictable. What you guys think? am I unfair and too critical here? Not all of them are bad but alot of them are.
Disturbia, this one was very good, same kid as in transformers and it seems new *cough, maybe I should say younger actors in their movies have this thing, well..., they are a little bit of everything. Have u thought about it? they are this kid, being a nerd, hacker but at the same time skateboardy cool punkrocking fix everything. Oh maybe I am getting old? ![Embarassed](images/smiles/icon_redface.gif) |

btw this was up discussing with some friends, was a while ago though but I need your take on it.
James bond (new one) - in the scene where he is getting intimate with this lady he is getting a call and then he says champagne for one. To me as I saw it in the movie James was the one killing this female, he was in the room with her when she got in the way and could reveal to her husband that James was on his way, hmm u remember in the movie? Anyway, to me James killed her and put her in the hammock, thus a rougher James but I like that explanation better. My friends think the female was killed by some other when James left but why the hell would he then order champagne for one? hmm? |

I thought Bond got the champagne for the lady as he was going to dump her
..But your reasoning makes sense as well. |

Saw a trailer for Dragon wars...i think it has the opportunity to be a good film....but i think that its likely it could be rather 'Naff'.
SUNSHINE.
Brilliant Sci-fi film. Very inspiring also.
Basic plot is that the sun is burning out and the earth is freezing, so a ship goes to re-ignite the sun, but things dont go to plan! |

Watched Disturbia yesterday and I think it was pretty cool. I enjoyed watching it. It wasn't rushed, a lot of the movie was used to set up the characters and mood, then it went hardcore. I think it was rather realistic as well, the dialogs I mean. Nothing too fancy, not one-liner driven, just some cool and cheeky dialogs. Also, the guy and his best friend made a cool "odd couple" style of teenage friends. I think this one will be in on my dvd-shelf soon. _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

The Fountain [2006] - Now this one was different, he is trying to find a cure for his girlfriend, takes place between a meditative world and the real world. I kind of liked it actually.
Here's some screens: pretty cool that meditative world:
yea disturbia was overall pretty good
ohh shouldn't take all that wine, me dizzy while typing *cough |

I can't believe how bad the CGI looks in that D-war trailer, but that hardly seems to be the biggest issue with this movie. But I have to admit that the shot with a row of swat troopers firing away with mp5s like bullets were going out of fashion must be the best cinema ever. |

Just saw A Scanner Darkly and really enjoyed it. The vector like style looked super nice. That alone would have been worth watching. The story was a little confusing but good and the music fitted great imo. I'd like to see more films like this...
What do you guys think?
I know the film is not really new to the Americans, but I'd like to hear some opinions ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

A Scanner Darkly was really quite nice. I also enjoyed the comic/realism style. Still not sure how they created it. This was for sure no simple filter or something. Frame by frame animation ontop of the original footage? No clue.
The story was indeed crazy. Good stuff!
Man, that DWar trailer was completely weird. Looked like they mixed scenes of 5 different movies together. Wth is this all about actually? Dragons vs humans? ,...wasn't there something like this before ? ![Confused](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) |

The technique used in A Scanner Darkly is called Rotoscoping. Nowadays, it's a mix of both techniques Max suggested. Basically you pick, say... frames 1, 6, 12, 18 and 24 from one second of the original footage, vector-animate them frame by frame, and the frames in between are interpolated by an algorithm. Pretty cool. Although I almost got nausea watching the movie, as the backgrounds and figures seem to be animated separately, thus resulting in that odd, shaky movement. The movie's plot was nice though, hail to Phillip K. Dick ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

I am familiar with rotoscoping however I thought it was only a post production compositing process. Originally used to paint out the bg of plates. It's the very last thing I would want to do on such a production. ; / |

Well, a guy who was working for my father went to Weta in NZ after he left the company to work in the compositing department. Those jobs seem to be rather understated in their creativity. He told us he was really happy with what he did. Of course, that's not everyone's taste. But not as monotone as they look from the outside. _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

Superbad was a good movie. It's ashame that parts of it were "custom made" for the teenage audience. Made the movie drag a bit. But still probably an instant teen classic. Wished they would have made the entire movie about teenagers and not FOR teenagers . But a movie formula like that doesn't sound realisticly market oriented. (would leave the poor teenagers puzzled and in shock when the credits roll) |

Surf's Up - Surprising good. I liked the documentary approach, and I liked that it didn't have lame pop-culture jokes. Jeff Bridges is basically The Dude from Big Lewbowski--which is awesome. The surfing scenes were amazing. Chicken Joe was awesome. I thought he was the ugliest thing ever when I had to do style guides for him, but now I have seen the film, I totally love him.
28 Weeks Later - Not as good as the first, but not bad either. Could've tried a lot harder when writing the plot regarding the return of the mother--what a waste of a good plot twist.
Ocean's 13 - Each new one gets less and less fun.
Zodiac - ZZZzzz
Knocked Up - Pretty good, but overrated.
The Fountain - Obviously he made this film for himself and not the audience.
Transformers - About as subtle as a car alarm going off at 3am. There was no peaks and valleys--just one peak after another, which is actually not a good thing. Lots of pointless slow motion, dramatic music used in inappropriate spots, crass sentimentality used as if the audience all have emotional intelligence of zero and needed the help. But you know, that chick is hot. In this movie, in some shots, she looked like the old Jennifer Connelley we once knew (the face only).
Spiderman 3 - Whatever.
The best films I've watched recently were Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Neither are new though. I liked Before Sunset more, because it was more mature, and also you get to see the impact their one night had on their lives--which is a lot more potent than just seeing them all over each other in the first film. |
