This image portrays an exodus of a civilization. Could be ours someday... There is a feeling of peace and the sunset represents hope of a new beginning. Regarding the spaceships, there is an analogy with fish both in their design and in the way they are grouped together as in a school of fish.

This image was done for a Portuguese forum contest whose theme was "Grand Space". It was done in Photoshop with a little help from 3dsmax (spaceship mock ups) and took me about 20 hours to complete. No photos or photo-based brushes were used as it was one of the contest rules.

Here are a couple of details and the painting process:

I really like it, it's stuff like this that really makes me want to practice more.

I find it very interesting that in the last step you de-saturated some of the light from the sunset. I find often that I'm very tempted to do the opposite. What made you decide to do it (were you going for more accurate color reflection?), and how do you decide when it's better to take the saturation up a notch or tone it down?

annisahmad - thanks, dude!

Sampster - Great to hear that I can inspire someone. I didn't even notice I had desaturated it. Mostly I do colour adjustments with the whole image in mind...and sometimes, in order to saturate something you desaturate the surroundings. I'm not sure if that is clear.
