I was entertained by it, and I'm a pretty fair movie snob. There weren't any great moments like when Spidey got his mojo back in 2, but it was better than average popcorn fare.
I can't figure out how this movie is the most expensive evarz, though. There weren't any massive sets, no huge explosions, nothing. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst are barely A-listers, so it's not like the money all went to salary. Maybe the Sandman wasn't actually CGI... _________________ QED, sort of. |

It WAS a good movie. People that weren't pleased must have been expecting "Lawrence of Arabia". It wasn't quite as good as the second perhaps, but it was only because they spent more time on the characters.

:::SPOILERS:::
:::SPOILERS:::
:::SPOILERS:::
:::SPOILERS:::
This is how:
COUNTLESS digital backlot and matte shots.
The unmasked Parker/Goblin fight
Marko's transformation
The Armored Car fight
The crane rescue
Black Spidey/Sandman fight
Parker rips off the suit/Venom transformation
HUGE Spidey/Goblin/Sandman/Venom/save MJ fight
Did I leave anything out?
:::END SPOILERS:::
Any of that would be HUGE money to do, and each could easily be called a centerpiece or climactic sequence. I think the second one cost in the neighborhood of 200 mil, right? With all the additional effects sequences #3 had, it would easily be 150 more.[/b]

Well the same guy wrote the screenplay that wrote the second one though this time story credits went to Raimi and his brother Ivan. I've yet to see the film yet so I can't comment. I did really enjoy 2 so I will be disappointed if 3 doesn't live up to the first sequel. |

Yes, because Jackson had such a prominent role in the preceding movies. Didn't want to spoil it, but Michael Jackson makes a well-cast special appearance as Kraven: The Hunter. |

I have to say I was very disappointed by the movie. While Spiderman 2 pretty much topped Spiderman this one got left behind. Yes, the vfx were stunning, that's what I can expect from such an expensive movie (altough I also don't understand which of these scenes could have been THAT expensive) but the storytelling was absolutely confusing. Lot's of scenes scattered together. There was no flow, no big emotional scenes...Especially the relationship between Peter and Marry could have been staged so much better imo. Also the transformation to "Bad Spidey" was irritating. He wasn't bad at all,...he simply got a macho..what I wanted to see was an inner conflict, a trauma. This could have been really emotional,...they made it fun and stupid instead,...I couldn't laugh tho.
So what about the the villains? They all were totally flat. Their motives were boring and completely uninspired from a screenwriters standpoint. They lacked character, and there was too many of them. SO much stuff I loved about Spiderman 2 was simply ignored. It's a pity.
What made it worth to see were some of the fighting sequences which were absulutely amazing, really. So, credits to the vfx guys, they always do their job. |

******Spoilers!!!******
I actually really enjoyed Spiderman 3. I thought there were a few things that were a little cheesy.. The whole Emo-ish Parker thing just didn't do it for me... but got the identity crisis thing across.
The part that made me groan.. (actually everyone in the theater groaned) was when Spiderman was on the way to the big final fight and passed in front of the American flag. he kinda stops and poses... it was so bad.
I really did enjoy the movie though.
I think anyone who didn't appreciate the time spent on the characters isn't a true spidey fan. The comics were always just as much about Peter Parker and the characters around him as they were about the fights.
I think while it wasn't quite as good as #2, its still a very worthy followup to the series and I hope they decide to end the series here.
[edit]Venom was Awesome! I thought Topher Grace did a good job with him. |

I don't know... What is it about the Spiderman movies? I thought the first one was pretty much the worst superhero movie I've ever seen. Only Hulk was worse. Last weekend I saw bits of Spiderman II and it was the same. How can people say that Batman Begins is a mediocre movie and at the same time extol the Spiderman trilogy?
I mean, apart from the sub-moderate plot and acting, I think it looks like plastic, feels like plastic and tastes like plastic. I laughed my ass off when Parker takes a perfectly lit photo of himself up in the air that shouts PHOTOSHOP. Next, Dafoe comes riding a Toys'R'Us hoverboard that's painted like one of Xzibit's PimpMyRide Toyotas. I'm not talking about realism here, I'm talking about credibility. That's what I miss most in the series. |

um.... how did Green goblin fly in the comic book? Alot less credible.
Its about suspending your disbelief and seeing it for what it is; a popcorn movie. nothing more.
Go in expecting it to be a popcorn movie and it will be alot more enjoyable. If you want something deeper watch a chick flick. |

A reasonable view. The older I get the more I tend to think like that; if I leave feeling somewhat entertained, then it was ok by me. It's only when there are obvious "blinks" in the story continuity or edit mishaps that I get a bit miffed.
But when a movie shines . . . does it ever. _________________ - Tom Carter

Awetopsy: That worked with 300 for me, but not Spiderman. I don't know. It's so much worse... I even liked Ghosts of Mars for being a failed attempt, but I can't force myself to liking Tobey Maguire and his constant babyface smiling.
Gort: You're getting me wrong. I have no problem with it being a shitty movie and I won't color my hair and fingernails black just because of it. What I can't understand is that people across the pond and here in Europe seem to fanatically LOVE this movie and I don't get the point. |

It annoys me when people dismiss this sort of film as a popcorn movie, as if there is no art to it. As I said before I haven't seen Spiderman 3 yet, but the second film I thought was not just an entertaining blockbuster I thought it was a genuinely good film and one of the top examples of the genre. |

So, does this mean comics are always popcorn style too?
I just expected it to be better than v2. Nothing more.
By the way,...i don't like popcorn anyway,... |

Heh... this is the old Sijun.... right here...
Dont get me wrong. I think there is absolutely an art form to creating "Popcorn" movies. I thought Spiderman 3 was a very good movie. Spiderman 2 was great and Spider man 1 was very good. I think they all work well together and #3 is a nice followup to a great story and great series of movies. But there was nothing deeper to it.
I love movies like Independance day and Godzilla purely for that reason. They're not trying to be anything more than pure entertainment. Spiderman's no different.
Perhaps that's why Im so forgiving towards those movies. Now if Schindlers list didn't get the atmosphere / locations / subject matter or even the lighting right or use actors who werent capable of pulling off such an intense role I would probably be alot more critical of the movie because of what the movie is trying to do. Its not trying to entertain so much as its trying to get across a point.
The only semblances of a point spiderman is trying to get across is about friendship and responsibility. nothing more. Just pure entertainment popcorn movie.
You shouldnt go into a movie like spiderman expecting it to be more than that. You only set yourself up for dissapointment. |

I get your point. However I wish there was more to it. They can make good popcorn style movies and bad ones. But being a popcorn movie isn't any excuse for some of the weird scenes they had in Spidey3. SM2 rocked. The editing, scenes, everything worked together. SM3 was totally confusing, even for a popcorn movie...why does pure popcorn entertainment has to be bad at screenplay, acting, editing, storytelling,...??? No excuse,...dude, they had millions of dollars for this flick !! (everything IMHO of course ; ) |

Ooooohhhh.....
Anyone wanting to bash a "popcorn" movie needs to wait for "Live Free or Die Hard" to come out if they want to see a TRULY bad example of that.
A buddy of mine is working on it right now and he says that the continuity problems and structural problems are PROFOUND. |

:::EDIT:::
I realized I probably said too much....never mind.
I'll just say that from what I understand, the PG-13 rating is the least (and smallest) of it's problems. |

You know how times have changed for the worse if instead of a black buddy sidekick movies now need a nerdy whiny annoying whiteboy instead. Hell I think I'd even have preferred Justin Timberlake to the guy they have now. |
