I like it. Hadn't heard the guitar used like that before, and it works well.

I did hear that note too. Wasn't sure if it was intended or not. Smile

Pretty catchy! Looks like you're got a good handle on expressive playing too. Did you just start playing?

Sounds like a passing note to me--like jazzying it up a bit.

Lunatique!!! Where have you been? Hao jiu bu jian! Smile

Thanks. I sometimes "played around" with a guitar before, but never tried to learn it seriously. Or semi-seriously, like now hehe. Yeah, i dont like playing chords.. i like solo style (the jamiroquai keyboardist style is my favorite), although that guy is so good, he plays chords like it's solo. lol

Damn Shizo, you're improving a lot. I think getting serious about guitar opened up a new level of expression for you as a music-maker. You've come a long way since the early days of playing around with pre-made loops.

I think you have a natural talent for guitar. It's pretty obvious that you've gotten a handle on expressive playing already, visualizing the contour of your riffs and melodies, instinctively knowing how to make a passage sound interesting, and even your choice of chords, picking patterns, hammer on/off's, slides, bends...etc.

I think you'll be deadly one day.

Updates!

Here is some of the stuff I can play so far. Some classics and some original tidbits Smile (400-800KB clips)
Or just view them on my Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/shizo668

nov21_01.avi Smoke on the water + bass (actually guitar played like bass)
nov21_02.avi Hammer to fall + solo
nov21_03.avi Finger strumming thing
nov21_04.avi Funk guitar with autowah!!

Lame. When I press the record button, my mind is very aware of the camera/recorder and I become very "nervous" so my playing isn't fluid and relaxed. Once I turn off the camera, I just emerge back into music and I seem to play better. WTF?!! HELP.

4th one is best by far.

Is that one of those cheap Strat knockoffs? I have a really cheap Mexican made Strat--I think it was around $200 when I bought it back in 98.

I've been on the prowl for a few new axes. I'm looking at possibly getting something from Parker--either one of the Nitefly guitars or the P-44. Their acoustic looks really good too (I like the P-Cool. I have always wanted a Parker, but they are so expensive.

I'm looking at the Line6 Variax stuff and the Fender VG Strat too. I don't think guitar modeling is quite there yet, but who wouldn't want a banjo, mandolin, acoustic, and a bunch of different electric guitars all in one (especially those of us who can't to buy a ton of different guitars)?

I'm going to pick up a bass too. Should be a pretty easy transition to go from guitar to bass.

BTW, what were you using for effect? One of the software amp simulators?

About recording video and playing natural--depending on what you're using to record with, you can just let the thing run and play multiple takes and pick the best one?

You know what's one song I really want to learn to play? Manhattan by Eric Johnson:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FL8aeeSTthQ

I fucking love that song. One of the best jazz fusion pieces I've ever heard.

Here's a video of some guy who learned to play it--not as good as Eric, but close enough:

Hehe, thanks, but I don't think I'll be selling my "ear torture" on iTunes any time soon.

Yeah, it's a knockoff of a knockoff I think. I had a choice between one that said "made in USA" and "made in Mexico." I chose USA because it was a bit better quality. Smile

Yeah, I like 4th one too. I should expand on it once I have better skill.
I put those videos on Youtube - http://www.youtube.com/user/shizo668

I'm using the NI AudioKontrol1 audio interface + GuitarRig2 software. It's buggy sometimes, but the sound is good. I don't have the RigKontrol though (pedal).

For bass you should really check out this kid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=bSyJrPqA3B0 Very Happy

Yeah and thanks for that tip on recording, I think if i put my camera's quality on low, I can record for unlimited time.

I posted a new video of me jamming to some funk rhythms.

PS: Does anyone know how to choose a different "featured" video in your profile? I mean, I want a different one on the very top. Me and my friend looked everywhere for this setting.

It's inspiring to see how fast you're learning, have you played any classical guitar before? Or any other instrument?
My greatest musical achievement is almost beating guitar hero III on medium Mad , but you're getting me inspired!

I think music is definitely one of those things that require talent--probably more so than art. Although Shizo's just starting, he's already showed signs of talent--that he gets the "feel" of how music is supposed to be played--the rest is expanding his theory knowledge and honing his eye/hand coordination motor skills, which is really just a result of repetition.

If he keeps going at this rate, he'll be an excellent player in just a short couple of years. I've known guys that just played only a short few years and were already blowing away guys who's played for over 10 years.

Shizo - you need better control over your string bends--you are pushing too far most of the time. Timing is also still a bit of a problem too--make sure you practice to a metronome or recorded music so you can hone your sense of timing.

Thank you, thank you.. Wink

Misc: I haven't played guitar before, but my immediate family members all played something (guitar, piano, accordion, violin). So when I was growing up, I always heard them rehearse. I played a bit of clarinet and domra (Russian instrument) when I was like 10. This just sounds better because of the backing track (I used two funk chords in it).

Lunatique: Yeah, thanks for your advices. I picked the wrong tempo though, this is too fast for me. 5-10BMP less and it'd be golden! Razz

Ok I'll let you know when I record anything else worth listening!

Check out my new ghetto bass! I had to remove at least 2kg of stickers before I could even play it (there are still some left). I guess the previous owner was a 13 year old girl or something..

And a bit of fashion photography.. guitar + bass
