1st one
the color pallette is more appealing to me. the other one is too saturated for my liking.

the 1st one also has some graet atmospheric perspective, that in my opinion gets too washed out in the 2nd one.

2nd is too way saturated but I liked how shadows pushed up. It'd work if shadows of 2nd combined with other values of 1nd :D

As is I prefer #1, but they both have strengths and weaknesses. Why not lay the 2nd on its own layer over the first and then blend them in any of the number of ways that Photoshop provides. Also use the eraser as an airbrush tool set to a low opacity/flow and use it to knock back various areas on the top layer... So many things to play with,,,, so little time... Smile

I remember Craig Mullins has some nice images with high contrast and saturation. Maybe study those and figure out how he balanced it out, because indeed the second one has it's strengths - contrast and sharpness in some areas. The problem is that it's way too strong and even across the image.

For me, the first one perfectly captures the style it's going for. The second one is going for a different style, and but it's not quite in the ballpark yet. It's sort of in the carpark of the ballpark.

And I agree with Ranath, on studing those high-sat Spooge pics.

Id go for the fist one by a long run, I do however like that the 2nd one is stretched a little bit vertically (gives it a more regal look) and I like that sharpness factor of it which just looks like a run of the unsharp mask filter. (I dont like how you blured the backround, looks a bit cheap) The second one looses that realism factor when saturated. I go with Eyewoo aswell that it might be nice to bring that saturation into some concetrated ereas of the first one.

Great image btw Theo, think I told you that before =).

50/50
It Isnt a Sharpen Feature im using. I go into Filters>artistic>colored pencil> Paint Daubs. And i usually set that very Low.. And somehow it brings out more details in the painting.

Theo is has some hardcore talent, and he has his own style. He's definitely awesome. But to me, I somewhat prefer a more saturated piece. I know it usually doesn't look good, but the very last version is most appealing to me. It really reminds me of Mr. Mullins' Tao Feng concepts. Also what they were saying about studying the balances that Mullins uses is definitely a smart move.

I definitely prefer the 2nd. The first looks to smooth... too sissy fairy storyish.

I like the bold lines and high contrast.

but... it has already been established that my tastes are counter to most here.

Most of the adjustments to this are pretty brutal. What's with stretching it taller? Looks odd.

The first one is best, imo, as the 2nd appears too ""filter passed" using the sharpen filter - it has that micro jaggedy look to it, coarse and hyper even.

I prefer the first because all the others look flat and too busy.
The details that the filter adds to it don't help with describing the form.

Guess it it also a generation thing.
Younger people grow up with such busy games, anime movies and images.
Guess that's why they prefer such fancy/overloaded/extremely saturated images!?

The Official Non Artist Peanut Gallery..
I like the First One
Because..the "effects filters" give images a complete wash that changes every one of the details in the same way and flattens the image..
There are other ways to get highlights/shadows. Hand work always looks better..
Even Vectors are too..smooth and slick unless there is hand correction of the line art..I have found that the ellipse tool, for instance, cannot draw the same ellipse as an artist..because the artist will catch the subtlety of the actual outline..small bumps and meanders that are "natural."
Effects are widely used and easily spotted..and are often used to correct and/or enhance an otherwise drab and poorly rendered image..Some artist can use effects as tools in unique and very original ways but those artists also seem to know how to do it without effects...I have considered it wise in my own..work/leanring ....to study correct traditional techniques and get away from layer modes, effects, filters and other "tricks.' IMHO
The first image may have effect applied but the hand applying those effects was light and careful because the first looks very natural..

IMHO? In My Humble/Honest Opinion. It's an acronym almost as old as the intranets. IIRC.
