Hello Graphic Gurus:
I’ve been studying The Photoshop CS/CS2 WOW Book, and I used some of the techniques therein to create the graphic below.
Let me know what you think.

honestly, this is brutal.
there's no composition, you're using cheezy photoshop effects like glows, and using black and white to create your highlights or shadows (a big no-no). plus, just overlaying a couple photos doesn't equal interesting design. _________________ matt - rhodes |

Well done on learning some of the software's functionality. But I think you need to find a way to use what you have learnt in a more interesting way.

i figured i'd at least try to show a couple ideas here. i kept all the cheezy subject matter, including the shitty photos you used, but i tried to arrange them according to some sort of hierarchy. You need to choose which elements are the most important.

You missed the lens flare filter, which is the first thing you should be adding to any composition. It's one of the first signs that a pro is gonna look for if you want to call yourself a photoshop master.
Remember if there's ANY kind of light source in your picture it's gonna need some lens flare. If there are no light sources, make some, using the lens flare tool!
Now in most cases the brighter the lens flare the better the effect, but since you're just starting out you might want to use a medium lens flare and then augment it with some of the default render>lights filters to add some "pizazz". Check out those spotlights!
You could stand to have some more detail on there. Remember, photoshop has tons of brushes and a good picture has to have all of them in there. Try using the leaf brush to add in more detail. That "eyeball" brush would be good for your spooky skull and the star brush to add some magic.
Finally, you have a sky there, but I'm not seeing any difference clouds. How are people going to know they're looking at a sky without some cloud texture? The default difference clouds is probably the "purest", but feel free to jazz it up with some funky colors! How about pink and green? Or maybe orange and white? |

Oh I forgot about fonts!
You only have 1!
But you have like 13 letters there! That means you can have 13 fonts to draw the eye! |

Everyone is at a different point in their artistic development. One of the hardest things to do as an artist is to endure the early periods of a project or of our development where you face a blank canvas or uncertainty about what you are doing.
In art, we have color, value, texture, size, and balance/position. When working on something, try to be aware of all these elements and how you can deliberately bring them together to express your intention and create meaningful relationships.
People with 'artistic skill' are simply people who are more attuned to these relationships and know them well enough to communicate their own ideas effectively and with beauty (harmony). |

lmao japong hahaha. i was cracking up so loud haha i think i just woke up my parents hahahaa that was absolutely hilarious.
as for you, jagella, as they've said before it is a good thing to learn how to use photoshop and its functions. but using them will not automatically make a good image, not to other artists at least.
Other artists come across such pieces and immediately see the overused "outerglow", "bevel & emboss", "dodge/burn tool"...and yeah the opacity levels. Those are all good functions, but shouldn't be overused, and/or depended upon.
the dodge/burn tool isn't much of a no-no, i think it can be useful to get gradient-like shadows that can be painted over. not so much for a final image though. |

Thanks for the input. I believe you're the first person here who has exhibited brain function.
I tried some of what you suggested, but my original image above looks better to me. I suppose beauty is indeed "in the eye of the beholder."

yeah um. jagella, i think japong was being completely sarcastic. seeing as all those filters are what beginners usually use to fill up their compositions. |

Search for this guy's other thread and his website. Either, it's for real, or it's an unusually elaborate ruse for a mere forum troll.
One way or the other, I smell a locked thread coming in 3... 2... 1... _________________ QED, sort of. |
