Your concepts are fine, a good tip is start with a canvas that is 4 to 10 times larger than the intended final product. This gives you the ability to get fine detail pretty easy and when done downsize the image and it'll look much better. The downside is at that size your computer may not like it.

Use reference materials whenever possible, the minds eye may think it looks a particular way, unfortunately the minds eye typically has a bad memory!

Keep it up!

Your hand... it's not a good drawing.

You need to pull back and start from scratch. Here's a link to a site where you can purchase some geometric shapes. Get them, and spend time drawing and shading them. You need to understand much more about how shape is molded by light.

http://www.educationallearninggames.com/wooden-geometric-solids.asp

Draw with a pencil and papaer or with your Wacom... but draw, draw , draw, which is the same as saying practice, practice, practice!

My experience with learning to draw and paint has been that I read a lot of tips and advice, and eventually I learn something through practice and remember "wait, this is exactly what that guy once said, duh". One such thing is what I think was said in Loomis' Figure drawing for all it's worth: "Don't pet your lines". Always aim to draw the line you want, don't scribble about until you have a thick bundle of lines around the object you want to draw. That will look kind of nice in some way because your mind fills in the "proper" form, choosing from the multitude of lines, but for your drawing skills it is much better to try to draw as cleanly as possible. It is harder, and I guess that's why I didn't really heed that advice until I had an instructor who basically forced me to do so, but after adjusting my "style" (handicap more like) I realized that Loomis had been 100% right, and the result of drawing more cleanly was that not only do the lines look nicer, the whole drawing is structured better because you have to think before you lay down a line.

In the end however, I don't believe it's possible to learn anything simply by being told how to do things. You have to find the solutions through practice, and often you'll find the solutions you come to are the ones that were suggested to you in the first place, but now they're your own, because you learned them the hard way. However good a teacher you might have, nothing they can tell you will instantly make you able to apply that knowledge in your own work. But as you progress, you'll find yourself able to apply more and more of the advice you've been given down the line, as long as you remember to listen and remember those things.
