I haven't heard many good things.. The general consensus seems to be that XP pretty much did as much as most people needed it to do, and Windows is just re-inventing the wheel at this point. Either way, I'm sure my computer couldn't handle Vista anyway. |

my next computer is going to be one of these.
then I can install windows xp pro and run all my windows apps and run all the fancy mac stuff.
As far as Im concerned Microsoft has screwed themselves with 7 different versions of their OS. Mac OS is Mac OS regardless of what you are doing with it. One OS for everyone.
Microsoft has no concept of the K.I.S.S. concept. |

Although I admit Vista aesthetically is a big leap, it does look very slick... sadly 7 years produced little to no innovation and there are serious hardware support problems. Don't get me started on all the rip-offs of OsX either... it's a joke. I'm an OsX fan now, such a solid and low latency operating system. The architecture from a programming point of view has some very exciting features as well. I'll continue to use XP and OsX together as I'm comfortable with both but more familiar with XP. I'm programming in OsX, so I'm thinking I'll eventually shift over to mostly living in fruitopia. |

I don't give a monkeys about what my OS looks like even if I had vista I would disable all the fancy graphics, it just takes resources I would rather use for whatever I'm working on. The only things about Vista that were of interest to me was the 64 bit capabilities and DX 10 for games. I have XP 64 bit so that's that one sorted. My only loyalty to windows is the familiarity and software support, I'd like to have a play with linux one day. |

I laughed hard at that part about Widgets and Gadgets- all that acessory stuff(at least) is totally ripped off from Play's Gizmos 98. I'll go to bat on that, I worked on Gizmos way back in '97. If I'm not mistaken, at some point MS discussed buying it from Play.
The software industry is basically full of feature and cosmetic aping. Even games rip each other off all the time.
All I know is that my old Apple crashed on a continuous basis, and the last three PCs I've had (98, NT, XP respectively), maybe crashed collectively 10 times. Most of those were NT. |

Most definitely there is copying of concepts from both camps, but the similarities are quite hilarious. |

and all you had to do was restart the app not the computer
i recently had to use a Mac after not using one since '02 and the way the new OS works really frustraited me..
it was a relief to come back to my trusty PC which i have tweeked to work the way i want it (litestep is a wonderful shell replacement ) |

Just think how far aqua has travelled, as well.
It went from OSX across to windows XP to Vista and even to web 2.0!
I like the way the modern interfaces are so much more powerful and the way its rendered is completely flexible. That creates a lot of room for great in that space.
How flip 3d is an improvement on just switching between multiple windows normally, though, I don't know. I guess its about PR and coming across as modern looking to customers(?). |
