A projector, not a machine that would transfer you back in time.
It's a few thousand years ahead cause not even i know any idea how exactly it would work, but in theory here it is:
You know how particles from the sun hit things and reflect into our eyes, and that way we see shapes and colors? Well it would be coo if this device could:
1. get info of particles that were <here> at <this> time back then, by calculating possible trajectories with given time and place, i dont know.
2. recreate them as a hologram around certain radius that you choose so you can see what happened back then.
3. sound waves could be tracked and recreated in a similar manner to recreate sound and maybe even physics (energy doesnt disappear at least around our galaxy, so it could be possible to track that too)
conclusion:
You would choose a radius distance around you to recreate and input the time you want to recreate. Hey it could even work as a VCR with rewind buttons and stuff.. neato!
I can imagine all these inhuman calculations done in an awfully small amount of nanoseconds would require inhuman computing power, but hey, i said it's a few thousand years ahead :D
Fine idear, no?
And yeah it's possible cause anything imaginable and anything unimaginable is possible. |

I'd instantly relive the moment yesterday where I found a movie file on my harddrive that I coulnd't remember the content of.
It was a guy in his room dancing like hell wearing a black shirt an a dark blue hut. He WAS an actual music video all by himself, dancing to Ja Rule or whatnot.
The pure joy of relivin' that piece of entertainment I certainly would like to experience once again!!
Wink Wink, Shizo. Keep livin' it up man!

Too much vodka, Shizo.
Even though computers will reach omniscence in 48 years (literally, if Moore's law hold true), what you're suggesting is near impossible. There's a point where a wave just gets mixed in and dissipated through all of the background noise. It's sort of like trying to find out what's on the Nixon tapes. |

Hah, i was serious about this. And sure it may seem impossible to make a device that would track an unbelievable *by today standarts* amount of information, but how about not 48 but 100 years, 1000 years? (i said it'll take long to get there, but if humans live on that could be achieved too, as were cars, computers, space ships).
If you told a farmer back in the day in about ~1500's that in a few he could fly to the moon, he'd be like "eh? *puff*"
So if i tell you now that in a few such machine will be possible, i dont expect anyone to say that "yeah dude, it'll be alright!", eheh im a baby genius dammit!
Livin' it up, boyeeee!!!

Say you did invent a time machine. Wouldn't your future self go back in time to tell your present/past self that you invented a time machine? So, until that happens, it isn't possible, unless your future self hasn't thought of that idea. ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Okay, assuming that this was at least a tiny bit conceivable...
So you'd collect all the light waves given off from an object which would be highly distorted from red shift by going (faster then light) in every possible direction to get all the angles, then sending the information back (faster then light) and then collecting all the sound waves that magically decided to hanf around in the same spot for the last 100 years and make a neet little video tape?
Lets see how many laws are broken of physics, gravity, thermodynamics, logic, common sense... |

well...you could make A big projection machine that would emulate a past period in time....but wouldn't a simpler way be to plug wires in the brain directly and stimulate the senses to give the user the impression that they are actually somewhere else?
Video games and virtual reality almost achive this...but if you were actually percieving an artificial environment like you were there...that'd probably drive you insane and decalibrate your mind with your body because pysically you weren't in the place that your mind was telling you where you were....
I truely belive that when video games and virtual reality become more advanced, people are going to be addicted to it like heroin and have bad withdrawls from the virtual reality world...sorta like the spice navigators in DUNE if you know what I'm talking about...we'll all become a society of brains in jars dependant on virtual reality...maybe

this sounds real good, but do you know how small particles are. they are so small that with every breath you take, you are most likely taking in two or three particles of julius caesars dying breath, that is for everyone on earth and evry breath. its gonna be a difficult task especiall with all them forces acting of particles bumping into others, calculating will be impossibe (it still is random motion were talking about) but if you travel at the speed of light time stops, because its always the same light rays from the clock hitting you eye, the new ones cant reach cos your travelling at the same speed. now if you travel faster than the speed of light, light from the past cathes up with you and you see into the past, but we all know you cant travel at the speed of light, so what you do? easy, open yourself a neat wormhole, travel far away, an wait for the lightrays from earth to hit you, and youd be projecting the past, cos you actually took a shortcut in time. youll have trouble projecting any decent image, but hey. you cant have your cake and eat it ~__^

cool idea... how about a device that would record particles from pareller universes from any time, but couln't do it in ours. or well, i don't know why, but anyway. you could watch universes dying and being born.
or maybe the device could track a specific brainwave or dna in to a pareller universe and you could watch a specific organism doing whatever it would do if things were different, etc.
eh... got a bit lost. >_<

interesting shizo, but wouldn't thee ridiculous speed that light travels at be a problem? For instance the visual information of what happened one second ago is already 300 000 km away from here. and 2 seconds? 600 000 km...
one light year equals to 946 080 000 000 km

Yeah, but didn't 2GHz dual processor w/ 2GB ram sound rediculous 20 years ago? |

yes, but they new the time that they would reach 2GHZ and 2GB of ram 20 years ago. Moore's law I think? Traveling the speed of light will most likely never occur. Under normal circumstances.

Ok, change 20 to 200 and you'll get my point.
Speed can be infinitely fast and infinitely slow (as there is no such thing as still, and no such thing as top speed).
woah what did i just say.. omg dude im a genius! :D |

If we invented a time machine in the future, then wouldn't we know about it, because someone would have travelled back to our time or past?
I couldn't help but think of bill and teds exellent adventure, when he losses his keys, and says in the present that he'll go back in time and find the keys and put them in the future so the present self would have them all of a sudden.
experiment: lets say I'm going to invent a time machine, when i do i'm going to come back to this spot on this day at this exact time............nope, my future self didnt show.

Experiences CAN be recreated -or "refeeled"-it has been done by some neuroscientists or something. They opened up the skull on the testperson and subjected the brain to electricity. Long since forgotten memories and feelings then popped into the testpersons concience. And although he felt the experiences as if they were happening at that particular moment, he was still aware that he was still in the test room. Conclusion: Memories don't dissapear or fade in "realness", they just get harder to find over the years. |

I read somewhere that scientist were able to get a beam of light to travel faster than light with some kind of energized tube or something-or-other. I used to have nightmares as a kid about paradoxes and other ways that time travel would screw up the universe. I hope nobody ever invents time travel. |

i doubt well ever be able to actually go into the past, but i think one day well be able to look back into time. and yeah the top speed is light speed. nothing can go faster than that, but noone said anything about shortcuts thriought space time |

Well, shizo, your idea is exactly as ridiculus as going back in time yourself... so why not just bring a video camera... |

Interesting prediction! I got so curious I had to actually calculate what this means. Moore's law says that transistor count will double every 18 months, if I'm not wrong. The Pentium 4 today has 55 million transistors, so at this rate, in 48 years, we'll be at 236223201280 million transistors (that's about 236 quadrillion using the American terminology, I guess).
I don't know if 236 quadrillion transistors will get you any closer to omniscience than 55 million does, but I'm sure all the fans required to cool that thing will drive me nuts

Shizo, there are limits to knowledge.
Consider, for example, the heisenberg uncertainty principle. Or chaos theory. Godel's incompleteness theorum. Or quantum probabilities. Even the seemingly elementary P vs NP problem isn't proved. (and boasts a million dollar reward)
You see, what we think is impossible may very well be impossible. |
