This thread is great, and I should probably get in on this for the sake of my own improvement.
These are studies.
Now off to work for the day.... |

I think my big problem is that I lack a good enough understanding of the basic underlying structure, and to do master copies might be an inefficient use of my time at this point in my learning curve- in favour of a source that provides a more basic starting point.

Feeling out my ability to proportion out a full character, so I did it with some less serious subject matter.
Studied from an Last Exile image I saw. |

Redux of a face I butchered in the speed painting thread recently. Started as a Da Vinci study, but I deviated just past the proportions blocking phase.

WOW
This forum really is the best...
I'm not worthy of posting in this tread...but I'll do it anyway.
Started sketching again...the 'analog' way (my girl keeps claiming my PC for work) I got 5 minutes to color the sketch ... It's supposed to be a ruin of a fallen tower, a tower who once was on top of a cliff...Change of Power made it collapse...I hope you like it.
Btw...I always tend to scrible my drawing, thus working out shape and form.
This leaves me with (to) many many lines... Should I continu like this or hold back on the scribling?

Hey everybody, new arrival!
I have my own daily drawing routine, got myself on a timer and use it as sort of a warm-up routine.
I saw this video from the Huygens probe landing on Titan and thought, why not?

Teeback, blck, great stuff. I've been wanting to do some landscapes- just need the time.
blck, I would say the sketchiness works for this particular application of it. I'ts appropriate to the mountain scenery.
I started this in the car and I'v enever been concious of how bumpy our highways and roads are until now.

Thanks FallDamage,
I think your right...the scribble-style really works well when drawing landscapes and rocks and stuff. It's difficult to apply this kinda style for character design. (like the picture shows)
>>> Teeback' your drawing makes me wanna pick up pencils again...
I'll try to post more...We'll see if I can keep my promisse.
Ps FallDamage ...I hope you weren't driving ....And I really need to start some anatomy lessons. I lack the time and energy after I get home from work.

falldamage> keep em coming. you're showing improvement. I'm nowhere near even being called 'good' at anatomy, so i'm in the same boat. I'd suggest some reading material to supplement your drawing. It will certainly help you improve MUCH faster then drawing/experiencing by yourself. Bridgeman is a great inspiration/source. Look up his books.
blck_productions> good work. I'm not sure about the lines. Your style somehow reminds me of the cartoon Dragon Ball Z that i used to watch as a few years back. I'd suggest using lines with purpose, rather then randomness. it gives off a much more appealing feel. WHat I mean is, know what you're doing with a line when you put it down, rather then mindless scribbling. It will help out in the end lots!
great work. glad to see some other people putting in work on the thread
got to scan in some of my work today. I should scan in more often.. still have lots of stuff unscanned.
Some are studies froma book by Bridgeman, others are from life, whereas others are still my crappy attempt at concepts. The painted ones are done with gouache. (Ex. sketches copied from the book, and the values, etc, were done for practice with prismacolor markers.)

Hey everybody.
blck_productions: i think you get problems with the scribble style when you mix it with the clean lines of industrial design, as you did in the drawing with the guy on the ... eh.. the snow-scooter-thing... The key is to be consistent with your style. Images tend to fall apart when you mix styles.
FallDamage: i'm still impressed you could get that down in a car. I once tried drawing in the subway, but my pencil constantly jumped left, right, left, then up into the air and came crashing down hard.
Still, people do draw in subways.. . how they do it?
For learning anatomy I would recommend studying from books paired with life drawing. Check out Kevin Chen's posts about life drawing on concept art's forums.
Two books I would highly recommend for learning anatomy are:
Fritz Schider, An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists.
It's small and factual. It has lots of very accurate pen and ink renderings and a great index of the muscles; origin, insertion and function.
Another book is "Der Nackte Mensch", by Gottfried Bammes. Where Schider provides only facts, Bammes is much more comprehensive and goes farther into explaining how things are put together and how they work. It's in german, and possibly out of print. Dunno if an english version exists, but if I could choose only one book I would pick Bammes. I managed to find 1 left on amazon.de, isbn: B0000BPJ4S.
Best of all is to get several, cus no book is perfect, so what flaws one book has, another one makes up for. At least that's my experience

Thankx Annisahmad, stefanMeijer, falldamage and Teeback for the comments.
I expected this kinda of comment. Scribbling is good for obtaining inspiration and looking for a composition (or certain kinda subjects, like landscapes and rocks).
But for the final drawing I'd better start again. And do my best to draw more accurate lines.
And if I practice very very very much...I could cancel the scribbling fase, right?
Thanx again for the comments I really appreciate it.
Ps. Sorry for the late reply...no internet in the weekends _________________ Dreams R free |
