The other day, I signed up for AOL so I could make fun of people. There are some real wankers on AOL. (This is not intended as an indictment of AOL in general, for all you perfectly sane AOL users out there--just the wankers.)
So, anyway, I voted on a poll today....
THE POLL OF THE BEAST, I SAY! |

Ooh what's that heart thing next to the screen buttons? Anyway, I remember this guy telling me a whole bunch of stuff about '666'... hey do you actually believe that? |

I don't know what the heart does...it's just...there, I guess.
Nope...I'm a complete atheist. I just think it's funny when a "666" crops up randomly. |

I'm more concerned with the fact that the majority of those polled think the death penalty should be reinstated in Canada! |

We can and manufacture such wonderously ingenious things and accomplish almost anything we put our minds to, sending people into space with equipment that lets us figure out what lies beyond our solor system or pinpoint exact locations of objects on earth with remarkable precision. We can modify life forms at a genetic level, make machine capable of vast computational power out of tiny wafers of silcon, build structures that are a marvel of engineering...
A few years back I was in a rather tall building that didn't have a 13th floor, although there were more then 13 floors. I just had to shake my head. |

gimbal: a LOT of buildings actually lack the 13th floor... it's an architectural paranoia or something... |

The building I used to live in went straight from 12 to 14, as well. I always found that really annoying, because it messed up the arrangement of the elevator buttons. (That is, one should have been able to count 5-10-15-20, and so forth, on the right-hand elevator buttons, but because of the lack of a 13, it went 5-10-16-21, etc.) Really annoying.
Ha, ha...yes, this is a disturbing poll on many levels. I had no idea so many Canadians were gung-ho for the death penalty.
(Actually, I'm for it myself, but a) I'm not Canadian, and b) I only want to kill one person.) |

How could Canada be for the death penalty? Don't they have like, literally 25 hand-gun related deaths every year?
Has Canada even executed anyone? |

What a poll to put up. I am personally torn on the issue. On one hand I think that some crimes do deserve death, however there are lots that done. The real question is are we able to agree on what does and does not deserve it. I don't know if we can. Second is the death penalty worse then rotting in jail? Is our justice system good enough that we will not convict inocent people? The proplem is that we can not reverse death. To me it all opens alot of questions, that I don't think that we can answer. I can answer for myself, but not everyone else.

The deterring effect of the death penalty has hardly an effect on someone thinking about committing a murder:
* most criminals think they wont get caught
* or are acting in rage/anger/distress and/or insanity
So hmmm ... maybe it's just for the victim's family - a good feeling of retaliation, when they see the criminal's eyes pop ougt as they inhale the gas or the poison crawls in their veins.
Which of course brings the victim back to life and makies everyone happy ... ahem ... yeah ... |
