I've been showing my photos around on a few photography forums... Those guys are tough. Here's like a critique left for the landscape below with wild flowers and thistles...
"I looked at your website, and your digital art is great! ... I love it. Which makes it all the more baffling that your photography is so bad. (Im sorry, there's just no other way to put it)."
I'm getting the sense that photographers don't particularly take to photo manipulators... which is where my interest lies. e.g., here's another one. The polo field was shot in Ohio and the umbrellas were shot on my porch in PA... so clearly there was some manip'ing going on...
Another on taken in Ohio... This one drove some folks crazy because I didn't straighten the horizon... and when I responded that I really wanted it that way... that was like pour gasoline on a fire.
Here's some more manips: The final picture... people didn't like the shadows...
Here's the original...
And finally this one... Again folks had probelms with the shadows saying they didn't look correct. I like the look of the shadows. They have a wide angle warped perspective that I often use in my illustration work as well.
Here's the final:
and the four pictures I used to make it...
That's it... Hope no one is upset about showing photographs, but these are so digitally modified, I thought it would be OK. _________________ HonePie.com

I saw something on TV earlier this year about photographers. The big issue was still film vs digital, so manipulation is like brain overload I think
I like the one with fence posts most.
You should do one like the dogs but with an invisible light source in the center of the image which will cast "sun" light in a 360. |

mmh, , the one with umbrellas on the field is a nice idea, but the trees in on the left and the right side of the background destroy the composition...
and the umbrellas have no shadow.
mmh, in my opinion the main problem of your manips, is a lack of composition and forms, but keep on trying, you're getting better _________________ *

they like manipulation, as long as you can't see its a manipulation..
the one with the dogs in doesn't make sense to me as you've included a dog which has some motion blur happening with its run, yet you have other dogs moving that don't show any signs of movement.. just feels missplaced, other dogs have the lighting all wrong so again don't really fit within the pic..
the one of the girl with the snake, there are dark areas around the top of her right leg that need to be taken out, the shadow on the top left looks blurred and out of place.. shading around the snakes head is a little out etc..
the reason the ubrella's don't work is that they look flat in the picture.. the lack of shadow really makes them look fake..
i love the one of the fence if you straightend the horizon, the house would be on the piss.. how they didn't notice that?
they're a great attempt and i'm sure you'll crack it in the end
which forums u posting on btw? |

The picture with the fence works for me, the lopsidedness just give the picture movement for the eyes. The rest however don't really work for me.
I agree with the shadow thing, it's like we tell people firt starting in this forum, if the light source doesn't make sence the rest won't. Regardless of the medium. However there is the fix of having a light source directly above the dogs, but that brings too many questions with it.
The snake I see you took it's original shadow and shortened it while you kept the shadows everywhere else. Again, kinda odd. I like how you removed the other kids from the picture, however the way you did it although it looks pretty good still has al illustrated feel to it that doesn't fit, and yells manip.
And finally, the first one, it looks impressionistic and painterly, yet compositionally I can't see what it's point is. Are we supposed to admire the flowers, the bushes, the sky, what? I think if the main focus is on the flowers and stuff in front then the horizon line should be higher up, and I'm really talking about the dark line of the bushes, cause it looks like those bushes are growing on the horizon.
As for the forum, I did brouse it a bit, and I feel more inspired cruising through the eatpoo forum for photography than I did there.
I agree with Bob though, most photgraphers are resigned to the fact that alot of what they do is and can be manipped, but photographers are still of the it's a good manip if you can't see it mentality. The fine arts side of things is a little different, and so I can kinda see where you're frustrations lie. _________________ "It's not the tools you use but how you use them that counts." |

Just remember that your art is an expression of you. Don't worry about those nay-sayers who have nothing better to do. I happen to like all your pieces. I'm thinking the umbrella one would be cool for like a children's dentist office (don't ask) if it was a brighter, happier, picture, but that's only personal preference. The image itself is fine.
So yeah, continue doing what you're doing, without trying to appease anyone. |

A lot of them are probably set in their ways...maybe they feel more secure thinking their way is the only way to do it?
Anyway from the perspective of just a normal person looking at the pictures...I love the one with the fence, and personally I think it would have looked very boring and cliche' had you straightened the horizon. Lots of photographers do stuff with perspective with fences and stuff like that; yours is different because the whole thing is tilted.
The one with the umbrellas has a very cool idea but fails to convince me at all. It looks too much like photo manipulation.
I'm bored when I look at the first landscape with wildflowers. You picked great subject matter and a good location. It feels to me like you followed the rule of thirds to much though, I wish the picture delved whole-heartedly into the thistles, or looked out across the sky in a way that made the thistles and wildflowers seem like an expansive field, spirited and wild.
The others are cool...I don't think I would have caught on to the photo manipulation if you hadn't shown the specific pieces. The shadows in the anaconda/girl pic are fine in my opinion, the shadows are maybe a tiny bit distracting, but you can't help that and they keep the piece from being boring and don't look unrealistic to me.
Much better than I could do though, keep it up, I like the pictures even if the guys on the forums think they're crap. |

Hi Phil,
You do produce wonderful artwork.
Having been in the professional art and photography field for a while I can safely say that as with artwork, photography is different things to different people.
I have found similar attitudes in both art and photography forums. Just depends on who you're dealing with. However, I will say that there is an "air" I feel more in the world of photography when it comes to what people think of your work. A very aggressive attitude sometimes. Add on top of that a lot of photographers can spot digital manipulations and will hate you for doing such things. Always hide that as much as you can. _________________ www.phfx.com |

The umbrellas are great. They look ethereal and kind of magic, I love them. I agree with the person that said the trees at the left and right edges weaken the composition. |

Photographies are not really bad as illustrations. Those give me strong feelings as other works from Eyewoo.. |
