Hello everybody! I've been away for a while, good to be back. I'm working on a 3D matte painting at the moment and would like to get some creative feedback from fellow matte painters. I'm going for a photo realistic look and right now it's not 100% what I'm looking for. C&C and paintovers are welcomed. The last few % is always the hardest for me.

Thanks in advance.

You upload the image to a website somewhere (one that allows outside linking), and then use [ url ] http://www.wherever.com/link/to/image.jpg [ /url ] (without the spaces).

The buildings don't yet look like they're part of the environment. Part of it I think is probably the lighting -- it seems clear that the sun is just on the horizon at left of picture, yet there are quite a number of highlighted building surfaces that can't be seen by the sun (let alone have the right angle to reflect a highlight at the viewing position).

Hey 3nasty,

yeah, I basically started with the 3d image above and painted over it.

The sky was taken from 3 or 4 different images of clouds and sky pieced together and I did a little bit of cloud and sky extension on it. Painting clouds isn't that hard when you have cloud reference, I like to use the smudge tool on that.

The rocks were taken from rock textures on the net, then I analyze their direction and clone bits and pieces of it to fit to what I want. I could have painted both the sky and rock texture instead of using photos, though it would have taken me a lot more time to do and I was afraid that it would slowly get less and less realistic as I go.

Yeah, I agree with you Sumaleth on the building part, let's see if I can fix that.

I'd also recommend adding more stuff around the towers, which would help integrate them into the landscape. Currently there's very few smaller buildings, no roads, etc. How do people get to the towers? What do they do when they're there? And also most of the towers are the same size, there doesn't seem to be a focus of your image. Maybe make one more central so it grabs the eye, either through size, color, etc.
