Yeah, that old lady freaks me out more than those creatures.
And nice work with that cover art. Looks like that you made the painting considering where the headlines will be, and left some space for them. Or was it just a happy accident?
Well done. |

Nice work! It's interesting that some of the pieces feel different from your personal works--guess while on the job you have to cater to different needs. |

Wow. I like it a lot, Mon. The old woman and man potraits are so well done. Its interessting how you play with different styles. The choosen perspective of the last one makes it look more dramaticaly. Theres a lot of dodge burn-tool abuse But it fits soo perfectly to your motive and for the later usage.
You have a good feeling for texture / color use and composition.
My fav is definitely the old woman. The face expression is soo strong. Comparing to the sketchy background. A Masterpiece surely. |

Great stuff. Old woman especially. Somewhat reminds me of Astrid Lindgren. |

Mon, the concepts are truely amazing!
Your zombies are just unresistable, the meat face creature rocks my pants off. Shapes on the cover art are well designed, I always appreciate your precisely done shapes, a lot of knowlege in it, I can never do that(am trying hard already ouch!). When I first looked at the composition of the cover I thought, hm is the background a bit too empty? Then I saw the final version with texts, absolutely right decision, well done bro! |

OOHHHH!!!! it was YOU!!!!
I saw those on IGN and knew it was a style I had seen before!!
Shame on me!!! I should have known!!!!!!!
I have always been a fan of your work and style. Great adaptation of the comics. That's what game concept art should ALWAYS look like. _________________ vyle-art

Heh, it all looked so familiar since I'm an OPM subscriber, I saw that and thought to myself "was that the cover art for the magazine?" I scrolled down an inch and got my answer.
Amazing work. |

Nice work Mon.
It took me really long to see what the hell was happening with his hand in the last pic. I finally realised that he was holding a pistol but it still didn't look too right, like his hand's missinf a index finger. |

heyhey
Thanks everyone, you're all too kind
Petri.J, yeah i knew where the important bits of text would end up, so that part of it worked really well.
Lunatique, you are totally right. It would be rather contrived to try to market The Darkness as something that it's not.
see, thanks a lot man! Also these were done over a very long time and the later pieces have more of a glossy finish than the earlier ones. I'm still coming to terms with what it means to be an illustrator
wasssup, wow, thanks. Precisely done shapes? No more mescaline for you my friend.
Vyle, cheers
3nasty; well so far I have done almost all the concept work on The Darkness, but there is one more concept artist here at starbreeze.
Freebooter, oh? i don't see it. Still you should know that for a cover like this most of the elements in it are manipulated photos and 3d renders. And cameras don't lie, right?
thanks _________________ www.mattiassnygg.com

NEWSFLASH:
I'll be going to the San Diego Comic Con, hanging out in the Top Cow / 2K Games / The Darkness booth (i really don't have any idea where I'll be, but i'll be giving demos of the game so I'm sure it'll have to be Darkness-themed at any rate). If you're in the area you should come and say hi. I'll be there during the whole convention.
2K has published concept art all over the place so I figure it's safe to show some more from this game. Most of this is from the very start of the project and don't actually represent anything you will see in the final game. I want to stress that before anyone comments on the absurdity of the designs and delivers snide remarks about the impossibility of actually implementing these brainfarts. We covered a lot of ground in the beginning
If you have read the comic you are probably familiar with the Angelus. Top Cow portrays them as really sexy bombshells but I was told to take a different path. These ultimately proved too extreme though:
I was trying to get a feel for the protagonist's demonic sidekicks, the Darklings:
I think this one is almost two years old:
A random monster (never used):
A random character (sort of used):
Early character designs of the hero, Jackie Estacado:
Jackie, wielding darkness powers (Imagine a console that could render all these tentacles dynamically, with collision detection and physics. Did your brain explode? Mine too.) Not used:
Pretty picture of Jackie (actually that's our AI programmer Anders Backman. He's got talent for looking bad-ass).
