I've been away from Sijun (and art) for a long, long time.
Speedpainting never treated me too kindly for some reason. Just didn't fit in my brain right or something. This doodle started to turn out kinda nice, though. Maybe 20 min, and I cropped out just the decent part.

trailbreaker: Your use of value is ridiculously limited. This can work if you are doing figure work or something more representational, but with the sort of loose indistinct subject matter you really need to step up the values to make the image more interesting. I would suggest starting your paintings black and white to establish a good value relationship and then start to worry about color.
joe84: very nice... I like the cleaned up version much more, It is much more resolved. I dig the foreshortening and the limited value. I do think however the colors could be a little more vibrant. The beauty of digital medium is that you can mess with the colors at any time. I would suggest that in this case, use some textures, paint some textures traditionally and scan them in. Use them on an overlay layer to get your image more saturated then go in and paint another layer to bring things back.
capitaine dub. you have a very nice sense for simple sketches and keeping your work loose. Good job breaking up the flat black with the negative and positive white paint. very nice variety. everything looks hot until i hit the lower portion of theh composition: the teeth and the batman. both are too carefully drawn and too flat. The way that you drew the teeth shows your lack of understanding of the form of the skull. I know because i have the same problems. They do not recede into space, they do not follow a horseshoe shape, they are abstracted blocks of white the rest of the rendering of the face shows great knowledge and beautiful markmaking, but the teeth just don't work for me. Just nitpicks anyway, keep on truckin'
I tried to use more saturated colors for this abstract. It started as a painting of a nude figure...

cheers Mr.Blonde, you opened my eyes to the possibility of pushing it more. When you said it could be more vibrant, yeah i instantly saw how bland it was...haha ill try that method |
