I've not encountered this before. Using Photoshop CS 8.0, and saving with the "save for web" option, the Windows filename length is truncated after 27 characters.... Is there a way around that? Saving normally doesn't have the restriction...???

Hi Phil,

Don't have PSCS so no suggestions there, but it happens in Photoshop 7 (WinXP Home) too. I don't recall the character limit but it's annoying.

I try to give files shorter names when I'll be using Save for Web in Photoshop but if I can't, I just rename the file afterward when I'm using WS_FTP to upload files.

If the name's too long to remember, or too complicated, I just copy it before using Save for Web in Photoshop, then paste to change the file name.

I had a similar problem at work, when I was trying to 'save for web' with long filenames.

Go to 'save for web', click 'save'

when it asks for the filename, choose 'settings' from the bottom. Instead of 'default settings', choose 'other'. A dialogue opens up.

There, uncheck the Mac OS compatibility and see if that helps. If it does, you can press save and give this setup a new name. So next time you use save for web, just pick your own [insert name] settings instead of the 'default settings'.

Thanks, Mikko. I'll try that.

Does this mean problems sharing files with Mac users? If so, maybe I'd better stick with shorter file names.

Hey... thanks Mikko... that solved the problem. Since the files I'm saving are for my own backups, I have no Mac compatibility problem to consider...

Glad it worked.

Jin, I'm not a Mac user. Common sense says that filenames longer than 31 characters will look the same on a Mac.

I'm not sure if this is the case with the newest Mac OS versions, so maybe some Mac user can clarify this?
