Last year I was hired by a studio in Europe to do some conceptual illustrations for a film project. These pieces were pencilled by the talented Jose Saenz, and you can see his line art for them at his site.
The client wanted a dark, gritty feel. Cartoon proportions with realistic textures and lighting. I'm pretty happy with how most of them came out, and I had fun painting them.
I used Corel Photo-Paint 10, and worked on lots of layers. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

The first 3 pieces are my favorites as they are full concepts and not just the characters. Reminds me a bit of full throttle, especially the junkyard piece, which is an instant reason to love it.
Also those pictures show you know your lighting pretty damn well. Would you mind telling us how long one of those full blown pieces took you? |

Thanks guys. Regarding how long they took to paint, the environments took 12-14 hours, and the character pieces a little less.
The client had more pieces they wanted me to do, but I was forced to quit the project due to some health problems.
Oh, and I can't recommend Jose's site highly enough. He's got some great character concepts on there. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

really cool balistic! I love the top three the most. For some reason, the first two have a "sin city" feeling to them even though the colors are not just black, white, and red. a gritty feeling indeed.
sorry to hear about your health problems.
All the best to you bro. |

Good stuff Brian! I'm not too crazy about the ultra cartoony stuff on the bottom, but the full scenes on the top are just awesome. |

Ever since I saw the Peter Pan poster I've been fan of your collaborations. The second one here is probably my favourite, it feels lived. Great work! _________________ www.TimoVihola.com

Good work!
I remember you talking about additive color/glow brush in the speedy and how it's overly used these days. It doesn't bother me in these. I like the definition of materials, for example the wet street versus the soft jeans in the first pic.
"Valium can work for you" sign is a nice touch! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Thanks Mikko. I think the glow brush works in this case because I was specifically going for a "rendered" look (the movie is going to be 3D CG, and they're lighting it based on my illustrations), as opposed to a painterly one.
Additive color only rubs me the wrong way when it's used on something that is meant to be painterly, since it's something that just can't happen with traditional media. For rendering though, I think any trick is fair game. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

...can't say enough great things about Brian. His work is stellar, man. My favorite part of our collaborations is after sending him my crappy line drawings....he turns right back around and gives me freak'n masterpieces like the ones above! I study his brush strokes and lighting as much as I can. It really requires you to print them in large format to do so, because there's just so much going on in those paintings.
Yeah, we'll be working together for a REAALLY long time. This guy rocks. _________________ Jose Saenz

Damn, Brian, your style's come a long way, but it's still distinctly yours. The junkyard scene has some crazy depth to it!
There's a sweet-smelling Full Throttle vibe in all of these ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ www.high5art.com |
