Oh my lawdy, I'm dying posting this, hahahahahahha! What a loser...anywahz:
Yeah I'm wondering if I should go to prom. Like, uh, I just don't know whether or not I should go. I kind of want to go. I want a buy a pretty dress and get all dolled up and go to "prom." On the other hand, I probably won't have a date. Hardly any of my friends have dates at the moment either, but I'm afraid that they will last minute and I won't. Then I'll really feel like a loser.
Plus I just am dreading it, thinking about it. I mean I think I would have an awful, awkward time. There is SO MUCH planning it's crazy! And I am not very assertive when it comes to things like this so i'm scared I'll be stuck being some kind of odd one out when it comes to seating or getting to prom or just i don't even know. I haven't went to any of my other high school dances.
So...pros and cons?
Pros:
It's PROM for chrissake
Fun to get dolled up and whatnot
Dinner should be delicious?
Won't be sitting at home depressed instead
Won't miss out on any prom stuff/have pics and stuff
Everyone is telling me to go
Cons:
No date
My teacher told me that "it's hard for smart girls to go to prom." Yeah I thought that was funny, too, lol.
I'm scared!
Will probably end up some kind of odd one out becuz I don't assert myself
Don't like to dance (and it IS a dance, afterall)
I anticipate major anxiety assosiated with it
Um that's about all I can think of at the moment. And I don't really know which list outweighs the other. Basically I don't want all the anxiety that would come with me going to Prom. Like if I decide to go, I'll start worrying about it...now. And that's a long time to worry just over one stupid night where I'll sit......ahh but see I'm so conflicted because I'm practically never going to see my friends again when I go off to college and I don't want to miss out on such an importantish event.
I want to HAVE GONE to prom. I don't want to GO. So...what do I do??
Somebody, please, shed some light. Haha see I figured that once I was done typing this post I'd have figured it out, but I haven't so I am actually going to post it! Here goes! |

Go to prom. Invite a dateless guy friend and have fun on your own terms. You don't have to go to the boozy after-parties or anything.
It's fun to dress up, and you will remember it for a long time, even if it wasn't a romantic thing for you.
I look terrible in my prom pictures. My mom had to pick us up afterwards because I didn't have a license yet (and my date was a freshman), and needless to say, I didn't get laid (I found out later that she was offended that I didn't even try to score). But I'm still glad I went.
If nothing else, it's a chance to observe all of the dumb, popular kids who are unwittingly experiencing the highpoint of their lives. For them, it'll all be downhill after prom. Their lives have peaked in highschool.
For yourself and the smart kids, you're just getting started. That's what you're celebrating. The death of highschool _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

If you end up not going, and if it's any consolation, I didn't ever go to my prom even though I really wanted to.
But whatever you decide I wish you the best and eventual happiness/satisfaction with your decision. _________________ Heads you live

When I was in H.S, a whole bunch of friends and I did an "anti-prom" and threw a big party in the middle of the woods that got pretty crazy. A few people that were actually going to go to prom opted out and came to the party instead.
I sorta wish I did the prom thing, but that kind of b.s. wasn't really what I cared about in High School. I think you go to prom so you can tell your kids all about it someday.
I definitely won't be telling my kids that I went to the middle of the woods and got so drunk and stoned that I was puking my guts out the entire next day. |

Just be patient with yourself and listen to how you feel.
If you are excited about it and really want to go, but just nervous, then going to the dance wouldn't be a bad idea. We all have to learn how to face our fears in life, otherwise we don't grow.
If you don't have any interest in going, but feel pressured by your friends or by some other reason like not wanting to be a "loser," there is nothing wrong with deciding not to go. You just have to be prepared to deal with any regret you may have for not going if you actually did want to go.
So my advice is to just take a deep breath and really evaluate how you feel about it. Don't be afraid to push yourself if you're just nervous, but don't beat yourself up about it if you decide not to go either. |

Haha that cracks me up how many replies this thread got so fast. If I'd have posted an artwork I'd be lucky to have 1 by now!
Okay okay, so that tux is definately hot shit. If only I could find a dress that was equally amazing, lol, though I admit I haven't even looked yet. |

Mine was back in 1991....
I wasn't going to go to mine, but some girl asked me to go with her as a favor, and I didn't have the heart to turn her down. It was really boring. If you're not the type to get off on school dances, then you probably wouldn't like prom either. I didn't particularly like most of the kids from my high school (my friends all went to other high schools and universities), and I was dating a 26 yr-old woman at the time, so all the high school stuff seemed very teeny-bopper to me. By my senior year I was working most of the time and only had 2~3 classes a day, so I was completely detached from school emotionally. I didn't even attend my own graduation--I had them mail the diploma to me.
Another reason I didn't care about the prom was because the Asian kids in California threw a lot of big dances where people from different high schools, colleges, universities..etc all came, and those dances were far more fun than any prom because you'd meet all kinds of people--not just the dorks from your own school.
I think proms are only fun if you have really good friends to go with--where the dance itself is only part of the crazy fun you'd have all night. But it really depends on your personality, your social circle, how tightly your parents control you, and whether you're a popular kid in school..etc. It's different for everyone. If you have any doubts as to whether you'll regret not going years from now, then you should go. |

This was more or less my case. I was forced to move from my home town against my will by my parents and I came to a school so incredibly different than mine I couldn't fathom it. I hated everyone there. It wasn't being maladjustive either; these were people who acted like the kids i wold have never hung out with at home, except it was the great majority. That, and I was constantly teased/looked down on, and sometimes flat out pushed for no reason.
I wanted to go back home for my prom, and I actually did have a date for a month before I was dumped. I kept looking until I just gave up because it was pointless. I'd have liked to have gone.
There's no way in hell I would have gone to prom at the school I moved to. In closing, I agree with Lunatique, unless you've got friends to go with it isn't worth it. Just be glad you've got a chance to attend yours if nothing else. _________________ Heads you live

Somehow, prom has been immortalized by movies and Seventeen Magazine as this epochal event in a teenager's life in the American subconscious. It's as if your entire pre-voting life has led up to this point. Then you get to the Des Moines Convention Center Hall 1B and it's all the people you went to high school with, only they're all drunk and looking reeeeeeeeeeal greasy. The decor is .. sub-cubicle, to say the least. The DJ is playing all the hottest Top 40 hits from 2003. The punch is watered down and full of glitter, and there are more than a few suspicious awkward fumbles during the slow dances.
So, don't go in expecting much more than that. Unless you really expect tragedy during those four hours, though, you're probably going to regret NOT going more than just giving in and having some fun for once.
Some quick tips to make your prom less epochal and more casual:
1. Don't spend a million billion bucks on dinner. Prom is, for most teenagers, their first real chance at fine dining. Out of some poorly honed instinct, they all opt for filet mignon or some other gigantic piece of meat. Problem is, right after dinner you're expected to dance for some 3 or 4 hours. No thanks. Instead, go for something a little less traditional. 20 bucks of sushi or Thai between you and your date should be more than adequate for the night, and you won't feel logy.
2. Dance. You didn't pay 30 bucks for a prom ticket to sit there and watch other people dance. I know the music is cheesy, and half the people there are practically copulating. Forget them and just go have fun. Dance silly if you have to, but if you're still sitting 30 minutes after you've arrived at the prom, you're better off leaving. If your date won't dance, find someone who will.
3. Alcohol/narcotics/afterparty: Some insist that the smuggled 6-pack of Miller High Life is an integral part of the prom experience. Others understand the value of not getting hopelessly drunk around a bunch of over-stimulated teenage boys. One way or the other, you didn't pay money for a prom dress just to barf all over it.
Ultimately, if there's one thing in which you can find comfort, it's that in about 3 months, you won't see 95% of these people ever again (god-willing), and once you get to college, high school instantly becomes a hazy afterthought. _________________ QED, sort of.

I am glad are school and grad year is nothing like what you guys are talking about/.. .That shit would blow. Are whole grad class we all are pretty close and know each other and most of the school. I geuss it's becuase it is a small school of 600 people so theres only around 60 / 70 grads. It's pretty much like every one is friends and there is no mr-popullar, or any thing like that we pretty much chill out in a big group play, soccer, hack, mess around chat, steal each others cars play pranks have fun and not worrie about that jiber jabber of shit that goes in tv/movies. For are prom are school had nothing to do with it. It is bunch of students that are putting it togeather so every one has there say in it and there will be dinner, dancing, king, and queen haha most likely a guy will get queen music is all choosen by the students. We made a list and put up in the hallway as people can write there songs down that they wish to hear. There will be drinking and after prom but it's all the fun as well.

Ha, my public highschool had 130 students. 26 in my graduating class.
That's why nobody ever really danced at dances. Everybody knew everybody, and you were afraid you'd make an ass of yourself. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

That's how it was at my first high school except the school did organize the prom/didn't provide dinner. And there were a lot more than 600 of us. _________________ Heads you live

Sort of a celebration of being where you are in life/ adolescense/ excuse to have fun with friends.
For a lot of people, that's what it is, anyway. A sort of landmark in your life that you can look back on as a symbol of your high school years.
Of course, if there wasn't anything to celebrate (like in my case) not much use looking back, eh?
It's just important to some people. Doesn't mean it is or should be to everyone though, by any means. Something that if you're going to enjoy, you probably should take advantage of, because you won't ever be there again. This coming from a sentimental person, though.
Hope you have fun. _________________ Heads you live

Hey Mega Muffin, you think too much. Just go! I've been to svereal proms too altough it might not be such a big event here in austria it was fun. Take it easy, it's just alot of people meeting, dancing, drinking et cetera. Not too special. You don't need a date btw. If you need a dance partner just pick anyone who's standing around doing nothing. It's alot of fun. Just go,...you won't regret it! |

if you don't face the anxiety, then you'll be the same anxious person the rest of your life.
Gotta fight it.
