So I'm going for a fairly painterly style; but the archer has turned out more cartoony than I'd like; any suggestions?

other C&C much appreciated ^_^

also; is it clear what all is happening in the picture? where are things visually ambiguous?

planned updates:
fleshed out foreground impaled figure
more impressive moonwell lighting
general tightening up of the painting

hm. no replies yet. I'm really looking for any sort of impression/thoughts. and C&C doesn't have to just be negative...
are there any parts of the picture that you think work especially well? something I SHOULDN'T change?

Does anyone play WoW? or like fruit?

Jeff! Good lord, how've you been? Very Happy

I'm liking the background right now, though the colors feel overly muted, in my opinion, especially for a WoW piece. One thing to keep in mind is your values (I'm not very good at that myself). Right now if you desaturate the image, almost the entire image gets muddied up into a very narrow band of values, with the obvious exception of the glowing bit.

I think the structures could be tightened up some, as well, but I figure you'll get around to that. The archer looks pretty cool, but he looks reall really relaxed. Bored, even. I don't really have any suggestions for poses, but unless you were going for a lazy, over-confident archer, you should probably make his pose a little less relaxed. Smile

Anyways, this should be fun to watch. Smile

I thlink LoTekk covered it, but the first two things that come to mind when I saw the image were:

a/ Both characters are almost in repose. This is an action piece, there needs to be a sense of energy boiling up out of both players.

b/ It's all too spaced out. If you pulled everything together, with much more overlap, where the archer can almost spell the breath of the other fellow, you'd have a much stronger piece.

Tekk!!! DUDE! I didn't know you were still hanging around the forums! XD
How IS everyone?

here's a small update: I fleshed out the impaled figure. I agree with both of you-- in that i needed to throw in a little drama. To that end...

I've yet to try your other suggestion Sumaleth (about re-arranging the composition); but I definately will next; i'll be interested to see what can happen.

Also, I'm going to redo the archer (this time w/ a human ref). wish me luck ^_^

Any other ideas for where I can take this?

so i've tightened it up a bit and been making small small changes; I also STOLE the border from a wallpaper from the WOW website (can you believe i feel really guilty about that? it's probably because I used to do that stuff when I was a kid and didn't give credit to the orignial artists *shakes his head sadly*) Anyway; i'll be changing it out for something original, but I wanted to put something there with color to give myself an idea.

This is the original color wash; do you like it better than the green/cyan version I posted previously? I had done it before to help tie in the different objects and make a more cohesive picture, but I don't think it's that bad with the more Texas-y feel.

Does the archer stand out too much? Is her level of detail too high?

The old archer was holding the bow in the wrong hand, looked a bit like an anime archer, which I liked.

The new archer, detail is ok. But now it looks much more like a Wow night elf, but her legs are too short. Snag a screen shot of a night elf and check the proportions.

Also for the percieved distance that archer is at, her left foot seems too close to us, could be moved back.

Hey that painting style is really reminiscent of Mac Hall's, which is a great webcomic. Which means I like the look. Not that that was a really constructive comment, but yeah... whatever.

Actually, I kinda liked it more when it had a less saturated look. It's definitely a good idea to introduce more saturated colours and a wider range of values but be careful not to overdo it. I know WC3/WOW has that cartoony look, so maybe it's down to personal preferrence but that's just my opinion.

okay so. it's the end of the semester and -- although i would love to go in and tweak the actual image some more, i've run out of time. If I don't finish this up right away, it'll never get finished. So. just a quick and fast question for the final touches: topLeft, topRight, bottomLeft, or bottomRight? why?

--Jeff out

p.s. I seriously do appreciate all the input i've gotten so far. I deeply regret that I'm not able to put much of it to use -_-;

If you are trying to keep the WOW look I would use the top left.
The moon well, elf architecture mean that its in elf lands which are usually greener.
