Techincal illustrator Kevin Hulsey's website has some real eye-popping work, but the real value there is the tutorial section; make sure you check out the cruise ship illustration "how to" - it's fantastico! From Hulsey's website on technical illustration:

"This page is designed to provide helpful information, samples, lessons and tutorials for university level technical illustration students and professional technical illustrators. Hopefully, you will find the contents of this site to be of assistance in your endeavors. Please feel free to e-mail comments and suggestions so that we may taylor the site to your specific needs."

Kevin Hulsey Website: Tutorial Section

Big kudos to Kevin for sharing his artwork and technique!

Impressive work.

960 hours for the ship seems a bit medieval to me. With decent 3d skills, he could do it faster and provide the client with multiple angles or even a rendered video clip.. well, great work anyways.

960 hours . . . if he only billed market rate (75), that would be a $72,000 drawing.

And the job had to be done in two months. Imagine doing three jobs like that a year; that's a pretty damn good haul, and you get 6 months off.

With that money, I'd probably use 3d and outsource the damn thing to China. He has the client base established, so why not Wink

To complete modelling that kind of ship alone in 2 months is hell of a work.
Don't think it would be possible to do with that good result. In illustrator
you can make instance dublicates as well as in 3d programs and
you get the forms done in much less time.

Also there would be lot's of work putting up all the lights, uv-mappings,
materials etc. Render time would be really long, you would have to have a very expensive render farm to get decent render times to adjust everything right.

I understand completely it's made in illustrator & photoshop and not 3d if the client doesn't have a specific need for a good 3d model.
